Isis is new, but not small, and they operate in both Iraqi and Syria, so they have battle experience unlike many of the Iraqi troops. Their goal is a Sunni Islamic state that spans northern Iraq and Syria.

It's a real shame that it seems like some of the most combat hardened rebels in Syria are also the most loony. If it weren't for the Turks hating them I'd say the only side we should be backing in Syria are the Kurds. They want similar state terrority as ISIS, but with a lot less extreme religious nutjobbery.

Isis isn't new. It's re-named Al Queida In Iraq, under new management. It's like i said, we need to build up the Kurds. the Kurds like us, and they can have whatever's left of Iraq when the still-going civil war is over.

Kurds are good for defending Kurd lands. I think there may still be some resentment to the US over our pledge of backing in Gulf War I and failure to deliver, but they're really just interested in their own sovereignty in the north. They don't care for governing or protecting other Iraqis.

Really lost an opportunity to build a Northern-Alliance like coalition there pre or early in the 2003 invasion.

It's gotten so bad that the Iranian government is reaching out the the United States and they are working out and planning operations to take ISIS down with a series of strikes against them
