I have no words for this kind of incompetence...

There are no ways to be issued temporary documents to tide thing over?
I mean, I know nothing about this kind of procedure, but there have to be some failsaves for people who NEED a passport or similar and can't wait.

Though, I do know never to just trust a desk clerk on their word for this. Too many of them just take the easiest route of "can't be done, bye"...

I hope things WILL work out.

My passport is still valid until the July 8, so until then they won't sign you the emergency documents and even then, unless you have a family member dying they won't sign them out. (I already called the Dutch passport people at Schiphol about this). I'm already on the great pay a fucking fortune to get your passport done by tomorrow speed list anyway :<

I'm not going back until Wednesday evening, I had already given them an extra day in case the passport got delayed because I don't trust their next day guarantee. Then THIS happens. I'd be more understanding if it was just this office, but nation wide? I'd like to give the guys/women responsible for this a kick in the nuts, that's for sure.

The dying family member thing is a blatant lie, though. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a valid ID.
The dumb thing is, as an IT person, the first thing that popped in my head was "What about the system backup anyone worth their paycheck in IT makes BEFORE doing a full update like this?"
And
"Why hasn't this been TESTED right after the update?"

I mean, I have colleagues right now who are literally zombified at work because of an update with one of our clients that got messed up, and they spent time restoring backup, reapplying, testing even more extensively until 4 am last night.
I REALLY hope that you'll be able to get your things done in time after all.
Maybe it pays going back to the civil office a little later today to bug them about the passport again.
I am pretty sure this kind of crap SHOULD be sorted as soon as possible and if things are up and running, the rules of 'first come, first served' apply in most cases. People who sit and wait nicely eventually do get their stuff, too. But I'd just show up and boldfaced claim you were told to come back later and try again.

I thought that this kind of crap can only happen in my country... Just.. *hugs* I don't know how to cheer you up :c

Isn't an ID sufficient?

ID cards cost almost the same, and the time it takes to make them is also the same...

As a result I never bothered getting one >__>

The good news is that my council just bent backwards to get my application through today after all, so fingers crossed.

I just thought- do you really need a passport? Can't you just use you identity card or something? I have always used my passport while visiting England but a lot of people while flying there used their simple ID, after all we're in EU ?

So... most people will just get a passport instead.

My parents got me my 1st passport when I was 4 years old so we could travel together, now I have a second one that will expire soon. It's quite helpful, my fiance moves a lot because of his job and I can visit him regularly :) It's good though that you'll get your own new passport soon :)

Yep I carry it with me all the time! Hell, not doing so is a punishable offence when visiting the Netherlands. They can fine you for 90 euro!

But.... but a passport is so large and bulky......

Here's hoping it arrives tomorrow like they said! Managing these systems is always touch and go; so much can go wrong, and the people up at the front desk usually have noooo idea what's happening behind the curtains.
