my pen is lagging and it's going to take me a few days to fix this.
do I need to update my table or should I buy a newer model

Update drivers would be the first thing to do.
If you know someone with the same tablet. Try using their pen on your tablet and see it it's the pen that's now working. If so then maybe get a replacement pen.
