The Kaiju contest results are in! We apologize for the delay. We ran into a unique problem: there were too many really, REALLY good entries. As you could imagine, that made judging a contest like this harder than not.
To fix that, the correct decision was the only logical one: add more winning slots!

You ruined it.
... too little too late, I suppose
Let's party like it's 1995.Here's a pic of what they look like.
Any idea about future contests?
Not to mention that while your entry isn't bad it truly isn't as polished or detailed as the winners'.
I'm nowhere on this list.......-____-
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13599523/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13279197/
It was also a nice opportunity to change up the base character, Ive been wanting to update Napther into a more bad-ass and less Generic blue western Dragon, and this Contest sort of gave me a reason to go ahead and do it.
Congratulations :)
Congrats everyone!
Thanks! The most consistent criticism and advice for improvement always seems to focus on backgrounds. I can honestly say the Baltimore kaiju attack picture was the first where the background was part of the composition from the start. Something new for me! Got to keep tightening things up. I have more cities planned for when I get more art time. =)
All of the submissions must of made the judges jobs a lot harder for this with such great concepts for Kaiju. Again congratulations for all of the mentioned and thanks to the team/staff who hosted this.
Though with seeing the winners, I have a feeling it isn't a rule anymore if they were still able to win. @3@
and wtf, there's rules they have that aren't in the ToS? WELL THAT BETTER BE FIXED. FFFF.
I have a bunch of submissions that are huge that I reuploaded, especially with comics and ref sheets.
I hope it isn't a rule anymore. D:
Also, reading some of these comments... it shows me which people are rather selfish. @_@ Wow. Sure, I was sad I didn't make it either, but whining about it here just makes one look bad.
With contests you must think on how you may not win at all. Best thing to do is expect not winning. Then it won't hurt as much.
Plus, there are always other contests to do! Don't be discouraged from entering more! KEEP GOING!
Though on here I see no issue with posting a link to one's own submission so people who may not have seen it can, or to a friend's. May as well have a handy list of all the entries to peruse.
It's a contest, and you're not guaranteed a place. Hopefully you entered the contest because you primarily like drawing, thought the theme was interesting, and wanted to take the opportunity to do something that you really like as a challenge. While a prize is always a nice incentive to get you going, I would hope that the fact that you get to do something cool and show off your skills (and perhaps maybe even get something for it!) would be the bigger factor. Contests are supposed to be fun. If you don't want to "waste your time" with fellow artists, maybe you should just stick to commissions.
was not chosen, or posting there submission for desperate approval...
People need to learn to be happy for others.
If anyone cares this was my entry: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13545604/
Congrats to the winners P:
I appreciate it but I hope you guys let me give my Free FAU Basic Reg to someone else, as I don't plan on going! ^^;
One that stuck out to me a lot was https://www.furaffinity.net/view/13582591/, and I was surprised it didn't place. It was definitely one of my more favorite ones to look at.
Congratulations to all the winners, though. There was a lot of fun things to look at and it was fun seeing the ways people interpreted the theme!
Thank you! :'D That brightened up my day~
holy god that is one amazing Kaiju!
Even though I didn't place, it was worth it because it was fun to do and I learned new tricks (and these comments! oh my gosh I am blushin. ;-; )
Understand that not everyone is a master designer nor know every detail of all mythology. Could more research been done? Of course. Unoriginal? A little but there was some kind of exploration in the kaiju realm we know, "Pacific Rim". Are they strange creatures? Defiantly.
Allot of of us never knew what a Kaiju was until Pacific Rim, seeing that name paired with these giants for the first time made that initial identity for us. When we hear Kaiju, we think of those glowing sea monsters from another dimension. There has even been debate from critical fans if the movie got the Kaiju right because it was not there Japanese monsters. At least the movie was creative about it. So then what? FAU asked for Kaiju, They got the kaiju we know. Despite the FAU page giving a bunch of different examples, we polarized the the ones that look more interesting. If this contest came up years before Pacific Rim, people would most likely still not know what kiaju means. Certainly they would do more research on the word and find your favorite old school giants and made designs that fit in there world. But that is not the case, we don't associate Kaiju with them because no one herd them be called that. Ask anyone in public. "whats a kiaju." You would most likely get a response referencing Specific Rim. And I Also doubt that anyone would have heard of King Ghidorah, Gigan, Biollante, Guilala, and Gamera like you talked about in your journal unless they were a affluent Godzilla fan or had interest in TV during 1950's. In fact, It would probably never crossed our minds that the fucking Stay Puff Marshmallow Man was a kaiju, or Kaijin if you want to be specific.
In the movie, they never specifically named each Kaiju. They would always say, "Class 5 Kaiju approaching." In the movies you like they would say "Daimajin" or " ITS GODZILLA!" today, we don't call Godzilla a kaiju, we call him Godzilla. Lets just say that not enough Kaiju association was made.
There are some points you make i do agree with. But your cynically harsh and bias criticism make it difficult. sure, less glowing deep sea monsters would be cool but just addressed everyone on this site incompetent of the concept is not reasonable.
Take for example my Western-Quadruped Dragon OC. I wanted to stick heavily to it still being Him, (though he didnt have the armour-plates before hand) and while sticking appendages in strange locations is a great idea, I felt it betrayed my OC's nature, so I never added them.
It was also (for me, at least) a catalyst to edit my character itself, as he now displays a portion of his "kaiju"-plates to help identify him, and make him look better...
Although, You do have a valid point. Though, some people take it WAY too far with some of their designs that it just becomes a broken mess...
I Understand what you mean with the Vampire analogy, But Twilight is merely Vampires and werewolves living in a modern world - they dont take much from the roots of their heritage, which is what I think you mean for this contest.
Ah, yes, Ill link those for you.
Napther before: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10511600/ and http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10571858/
"Kaiju"-Napther: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13279197/
Napther after contest: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13793061/ and http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13785825/
That was sort of what I was getting at. I wanted it to still be my original character underneath, So of course there isnt much difference as I dont want to step out of my comfort zone totally by wrecking my OC a bit.
(Although, between Old Napther and the Kaiju, there is some differences. But between the Kaiju and the New version of Napther there isnt much besides more plates and now glows... just remember which way he progresses)
I understand you are very strongly-minded on this theme, but, As I mentioned before, a few of these are peoples OCs, and like me, they didnt want to step out of their comfort zone by modifying their OC because it is an Avatar of themselves - They probably didnt want to have extra anything...
As for defining traits, Napther's flame-like stripe has been hugely unique throughout FA. These plates now give him a different Silhouette. And I have seen far simpler designs for characters become Popular, despite them looking more generic than Napther, But again, too much on a character just looks like a mess...
I know you dont want to sound like a douche-bag, but unfortunately its the internet - some one is bound to get offended by something either you or I have said here... But, is there anything else to discuss?
Congrats to everyone who did place, though! Your designs were all incredible, and you totally deserved the win. :D *cheer on!*
What pretentious bads. "THIS is why I play the game with a giant chicken in it. SO sick of unoriginality. *draws terrible unoriginal art like everyone else.*"
Painful in that it burns my retina to behold the self-serving nature of the words spoken in them.
For shame.... for shame.
Yeah, a bunch of people probably are douchebag assholes. A bunch have no clue what they're talking about. Some may in fact be attention whores who just can't deal with losing anything. Some feel the need to bring up how their opinions are (god forbid!) Different than those of the contest judges. Some whine just for the sake of whining.
But a small, small handful, a teeny minority, may get the urge to spout such things for other reasons. Personally, I think at least one of the entrants is a new, budding artist desperately thirsty for attention to the point where they act the fool to do it. And in other cases, people may have severe confidence issues when it comes to their art, and while they don't expect everyone to fawn over them and praise every doodle they do, they also have never received any accolades whatsoever so a loss is a much bigger deal to them than it may be to you.
Cases...such as my own. I do apologize about my comments up top, and I shouldn't have left them there. But that was in the immediate aftermath of finding out the winners, after I had staked everything on placing in this. Long story short, I told myself I would pony up and go to FAU (after convinving myself I had no business going because I'm not a well-known artist) if I placed and won a registration. Placing would have meant that yes, I did matter and I was worthy of going. But I didn't, and it hurt, so I felt the need to spew.
I've calmed down now, and regret the bit of a tantrum I threw. But in retrospect I just felt the need to point out that yes, the majority may be comprised of babies and jackasses, but just a few of us were truly hurt and said stupid things for what, to us at the time, were legitimate reasons.
You don't need to explain it.
Why would you limit yourself to let the judges of this competition decide what you do?
That's absolutely absurd. "Worthy of going?" Seriously?
You only hold yourself back, and your attitude is getting in the way.
http://www.deviantart.com/art/Rabbi.....llow-286350975 There are other examples, but I'm having a hard time finding them. This was entered in the official Cute Monster T-Shirt contest, and ended up being one of the winners, despite the fact it's in no way a monster, just a darkly colored human in a patchwork rabbit suit. It had no business being in the contest, let alone WINNING the contest.
There was another one that came to mind considering photo-manipulation involving monsters, there were all these cool pictures of real, honest to god monsters, and once again the winner is a ****ing HUMAN! Just a human in scraggly body paint and nothing else, really.
Here is in third place though since that contest was not for the closed down Deviantwear shop. This comment does explain the reason why DA chose it http://comments.deviantart.com/1/28.....975/2866014422 To be honest it does work considering humanoid monsters.
Also, she didn't win third place, she was one of three winners. Also, there were so many better artists with better monsters that deserved to win more. I don't go by who's "underrated," I go by who I feel deserves to win. I think DA deliberately chose something human because DA hates non-human designs, which is suggested by a lot of their so-called "monster" contests that more often than not are won by pictures of humans.
Elvira would be shocked.
Honestly, those who can draw humans well are doggone good artists, because we're hard to draw "right," probably because we see people everyday and can spot if something is off.
Most people are not anti human on here, just more interested in furry. But it's an art site open to more than just furry stuff. (Also, it's an art site open to multiple ratings, not just "a porn site" like some call it.)
Also, in the species part of the profile, more are listing "human."
I don't particularly like humans or art of them, but I don't hold it against people for drawing them. I just don't view that stuff. But it still bugs me when I see a human win a contest where the winner should be something else.
(Did I respond to the right post?)
Dictionary.com
monster[ mon-ster ]
noun
1. a legendary animal combining features of animal and human form or having the forms of various animals in combination, as a centaur, griffin, or sphinx.
2. any creature so ugly or monstrous as to frighten people.
3. any animal or human grotesquely deviating from the normal shape, behavior, or character.
Human is included, not excluded.
Also, FA's comment structure doesn't help me know which of your comments are directed to me.
Yeah, I do kind of wish they would fix that. I also kind of wish they fixed an error where when you view a picture you faved, and click out of it, sometimes the picture gets unfaved.
And to cut down the replies, DA has human art in a greater proportion to even here, so it makes sense they wouldn't alienate their userbase. It would be like a contest here excluding anthro.
In closing, the judges judged. Some people will dislike it. Shrug and move on to the next contest.
As for the unfave bug, I have no idea. I've never run into that, just the "no response...click again...does the fave / unfave thing."
You're arguing over a "cute monster" t shirt contest for goodness sake. You obviously dislike human characters. We get it. But humanoid monsters are monsters. Just not your cup of tea. It doesn't mean they're not monsters. Heck, go back to tribal and medieval lore and you'll find plenty of humanoid monsters. Medusa, some nagas, harpies, sirens. Look at Hollywood films of recent history...Freddy Krueger...Jason Voorhees...Species...Alien (the H.R. Geiger ones). Maybe not as "monstrous" in the minds of some, but still monsters in their own unique way.
The human monster is a growing genre. If anything, maybe you can convince them to have a separate contest for non humanoid monsters.
Again, nothing against anyone who draws human monsters. Maybe I could convince them to have a contest for true non-human monsters... Except I don't go there anymore.
[...] can you really blame someone for being annoyed by it? It really does get frustrating at times when exactly what you don't want to see win a contest wins constantly.
Perhaps somewhat, but you won't change the credentials by which they judge things, more than likely. Such is life, and not everyone will always be pleased with competition / judging results. I just wish they wouldn't attack those who win or say things like "This shouldn't have won." (Not saying you did.) It's not their fault they won. That just sounds wrong to say...
If you want a crazy beast that no human could ever suit in, or puppet, then you don't want a Kaiju.
DA does not hate anything of the sort, stop speaking for a million users at once. I'm there pretty strongly, and I don't hate non human things? So... Yeah. There's that, and there's professional monster concept designer and creature workshop professionals that post their work on DA (and here!) Please find me proof of all the hate, because I still haven't seen it.
Get off your bizarrely high horse, and learn how to be less pretentious.
And who you saying has a high horse, asshole? I was NOT talking for everyone on DA, I was talking for people who work their asses off to make an amazing looking monster with nice design and detail, only to have their work beaten out by average drawings and artworks of HUMANS. Which is another big gripe I had with the Cute Monster T-Shirt contest: not just the fact it was basically the ONLY HUMAN ENTRY IN THE CONTEST, but the fact that it wasn't even the best artwork in the contest, nor did it really make the best T-Shirt.
And guess what, YOU are not a DA contest judge, so you really have no reason to talk, so fuck off or learn some manners.
(You're probably wondering why my post is so sour right now. That's because I have very low tolerance for people like Luckypan who think they can just barge into a conversation, thinking they know everything about everything, and basically being a jerk to people who aren't being jerks themselves.)
You're not critiquing shit here on the page where the winners may not even see your comment. That's the most ass-backwards excuse I've ever heard lol.
Also, to add to your asspain, Pacific Rim 2 was confirmed for April 2017. LOL
First of all, I knew about the sequel coming out, just as I know about the new Gamera film being worked on for next year, and the sequels confirmed and under way by Gareth Edwards for Godzilla XD. Second, I post my criticisms here because it isn't just the artists to complain at as it is the Site in general and the people who voted in these pictures as the winners. If you don't understand that, there's not much else I can tell you I'm afraid. That's just how it is :I.
Can't we leave out all the bullshit (critique, sob stories, sore loser comments) and just leave this journal announcing winners to be just that? Why do you have to piss in people's cheerios HERE of ALL PLACES?! You can't go to the artist? You can't go to some of the people doing whatever it is that has your panties in a knot? Nope. Gotta do it here to rain on the parade just because you just HAVE TO. You absolutely HAVE TO. There's no way you CAN'T just step back and keep from the bullshit for the sake of this not being the time or the place. Nope. Everyone HAS to hear your bullshit because shut up.
The level of bullshit...holy shit.
I don't know why people tend to put 'the internet' as an implication for anything. Good manners and common sense doesn't change because you log on. I'm still going to hold a person to the same level of respect and decency as I would if I were looking right at a person. Nobody asks for a lot of things on the internet and still get them, doesn't mean it's warrented. It's still completely bull, even more so now that you're essentially going "here's my unwanted, unasked for, bullshit opinion based on personal preference (not even a critque. Going 'your noses are lopsided a bit' is critique, going 'I like how Don Bluth draws noses therefore everyone that doesn't draw it this way is wrong' is not, which is what happened here)."
Can't people just let these winners have their moment without being debbie downers and putting their brand of bull where it's not wanted? that's all I'm saying. The critique wasn't even legit critique. It was a snarky remark hidden among a backtrack and called a critique.
It was legit critique. Yeah it should have been spun a little differently, but it was a legit critique. Kaijus aren't 50 foot tall furries, many would agree with that.
And critique, if it's to be legit, should be done in a way that's not condescending and snarky. That wasn't what it was.
And of course the winners will probably still be happy, but the fact still remains there are people pissing in other people's cheerios regardless of whether or not someone will be affected by it or not and it's still highly irritating. Some of these comments are ridiculous.
And again, if it's legit critique for the artist, then it should be on the artist's piece. The contest wasn't held to uphold to the specifications of the select few die hard people who have to have their fantasy characters made a certain way, it was held as per what whoever the person starting the thing wanted. That's it. So therefore, the entrants all did what they were supposed to. It's not really up to the peanut gallery to bitch AFTER the fact as if that in and of itself is the time for it.
Legit critique or not, again, there is a time and place for it and shoving it unwanted down someone's throat in a prize winning journal that's not specifically for those issues is not the time and place.
I wasn't taking anything personally? Again, an assumption just because I saw something i personally found to be unsavory and commented on it. Now that I've shown I don't agree with your line of logic you're resorting to childish bullshit and "you're so mad"
I've just got a difference of opinion over something i personally found to be poor behavior. I can't take it personally because it wasn't directed at me, but that doesn't mean I can't have an opinion over it.
Now i'm going to actually stop talking to you because you've proven to be someone unable to handle someone with a difference of opinion which is funny because you talk about people in a fandom doing something when you're acting typical of someone presented with logic they can't actually refute.
And the simple fact you devuldge into childish nonsense speaks more of you getting offended than me, dude. Just because I said something about a topic you didn't personally find issue with, you turn around assume I'm angry and assume I'm taking it personally then go 'tl;dr' on a comment that was not directed at you, so this whole comment is a ball of irony and hypocrisy.
Have a nice. Not everyone's going to agree with your brand of bullshit. You should learn that about life if you're the type to force your "critiques" down other people's throat whether they ask for it or not
Verdict: He's just another elitist asshat.
Critique is actively pointing out something an artist needs work on based on something that's not a personal preference. Saying 'The character's arm looks a bit off at the forearm" is critique, saying "I like how so and so draws bodies and characters and anyone that doesn't draw it this way is wrong/bad/unoriginal" or "I don't like how they based this character off this character (which is friggen silly considering that's just their personal preference. God forbid someone draw something based off what they LIKE) so I'm going to disregard the effort, skills, and time it took to create this thing that's only BASED off something, not completely copied and would take at least some thought design wise."
And I LOOOVE how people seem to think it's okay to shove their "critiques" where it's unwanted and unasked for just because it's the internet. Here, let me shove my personal bias and preference down your throat. Because that's okay to do. Let me act like a irritating individual because for some people being on the internet means you can stop acting like a decent human being and being on the internet is the excuse for such behavior.
It was bullshit whiny bias over a personal preference that not everyone has, then extended to the voters who A. probably don't all have the same background information as this person complaining about their voting method and therefore would naturally vote based on what they liked, and not based on actual lore or what have you. and B. can vote however the fuck they like because it's their choice, not vote based on specifications that this person put into place that didn't need to be there.
Should've just been a journal congratulating the hard work and effort of artists. I may not have known what the crap the species of monster they were drawing was, but I thought it was pretty cool.
"TL;DR on that comment you weren't talking to me to anyway."
Good.
Just as you're able to type whatever the heck you want whenever the heck you want, so can I. I'm very much able to say 'hey that's bullshit'
If YOU didn't want someone to call you out on your mess then YOU shouldn't be the one posting it. Not everyone's going to be okay with the shit you say, just like everyone won't be okay with the shit I say.
And just because it's going to happen doesn't mean people have to be okay with it. I'm still going to call bullshit if I see it happen again because i think it is bullshit. Just because 'oh no, it's going to happen again' doesn't mean I should stop having an opinion on the matter.
So take your own advice. Don't like what people have to say in regards to the stuff you post, don't post it. Don't sit here and tell them to walk away from your brand of bullshit when you're actually able to post whatever the hell you want about it. It goes both ways.
Except 1. This is a forum of text, so I'm speaking on something that was SAID. Things that were SAID in this journal. So why you felt the need to throw that stipulation on it is astounding. This is the internet. Everything is literally in text. There's no reason for me to seperate the two because what I was talking about was some of the comments people were making, which in it of itself is an action of doing. So in this instance they are the same thing.
and 2. My point still stands, there is a time and place to say your critique and post your own brand of bullshit. This was neither the time nor the place.
And it's seriously laughable that you just did the MOST hypocritical thing, are now trying to backtrack and say "I was talking about DOING something" even though I was talking about the comments here and people commenting here is STILL A FUCKING ACTION. Holy shit.
And it's HE. I think it's you who didn't understand anything I said based on the response right here.
"I was talking about things people do, not say on the internet on a text based journal, because you weren't talking about something completely different than what I want to argue with you about. Nope."
Holy shit. Laughable. I love the insults to my intelligence too. Pretty funny considering the huge logic fail and act of hypocritical irony you've so gracefully shown me tonight. Entertaining. Sounds like you can dish out the "critique" but can't handle when someone else gives you theirs.
Now slow down and properly read what I've said before reponding. And try not to misgender me this time. Thanks!
I'm speaking on the shitty comments and failed "critiques" that should've been left some place else. That's it. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.
So what even the fuck are you going on about now?
And be careful playing that game. You actually need to be smart to play it. Don't hurt yourself.
You like giving your bullshit but don't like taking it. Which is moronic and childish. Get over yourself. You fucked up.
Lol some furries. Biggest hypocrites and then to say I'M the dumb one. HOLY SHIT.
Look at your typing and grammar then come back to me with that insult. lol
I'll give you a hint: he isn't worth talking to!
It's funny when people do and say dumb shit and then call other people dumb. Hilarious. And he keeps going with it too.
Now THAT'S comedy gold.
Also, I really should sign into FA more often. This would've been a fun contest to do. Oh well! There's always a next time.
Honestly, I'd be curious to see what you come up with! Haven't seen anything from you in a while. *prods* They should run these sorts of competitions a couple times a year.
I know, I don't seem to pump out the art like I used to many years ago, no thanks to my previous job. >.-.> So much stress and bad things... But I am working on a couple projects, and I do post some stuff from time to time. I feel horrible that I seem to post like 1-2 drawings a year nowadays. :C I aim to fix that.
But hey, congrats dude! :D
Congrats to those chosen
i had no idea there was even a contest going on in the first place.
Though, seeing the comments and reviews on the results, I am a little curious. Is the picking biased towards gloss and expensive programs, or is it based on talent and creativity?
By no means am I claiming these artists to have no talent or creativity though, those pieces are incredibly astonishing.
To me I've always viewed Photoshop or multihundred paid-for programs to be an unfair advantage. Not everyone can buy, or pirate if you're that way, a program like that.
Not saying Photoshop shouldn't be allowed either, people are skilled with whatever they use. It surely is a wonderful tool, though I've seen contests before where some people have the best of all creativity, things I'd like to see brought to life in the theater, only to be trampled by the most polished of unoriginal things.
I feel its comparable to the gaming industry these days. Things like CoD and Battlefield are fun to some people, but its always the same damn game. Things like Minecraft though, it doesn't have the best of graphics (unless you get Optifine and even a 32x texture pack), but gameplay is so varied from world to server that you never run out of things to do, and never run out of neat ideas. And each update gives the game a whole new vibe each time, rather than new guns this and better graphics that.
Congrats to all the winners once again though, you all truly deserve to be in your positions!
Maybe its the side of me that understands I'm too poor to buy jack, dunno. :lmao
Then there's Gimp. It's free and people can make amazing things with it.
