Even if its not the majority, it's nice to see at least a few unknown artists in the winners circle for once. Hopefully they get some well deserved love.

People picked based on what they felt lived up to the kaiju-theme, the fun, creativity -- not just who made it, but what went into it. We just ended up with so many good submissions it was hard to pick out a lot of the stand-out ones.

Understandable. It's just more often then not, only the "name brand" artist seem to win. It's nice to see it wasn't a popularity contest as these things often turn into. Big congrats to the chosen winners! There are a lot of awesome entries. Hopefully there will be more of these in the future.

A lot of awesome stuff! Got to watch a lot of spiffy artists I didn't know about.

Many of the runners up created creatures that actually looked like Kaiju, to bad they didn't win. Not to seem a bit 'picky' but the furred enters don't scream Kaiju to me, just huge mammal monsters. RedMatter90 created one bad ass monster and I think they should have at least placed.

I agree. Some of the entrants to me just seemed to create giant furries, but there was nothing really "monstrous" about them. I also agree with the runner-up stance: it was great seeing more of the traditional fantasy-styled dinosaur/dragon monsters in there, and not the gritty brown-and-blue space marine monsters that are all over the place today. I'm surprised none of those traditional kaiju won; I felt some of them really had that campy, 1950s tokusatsu feel that really embodies the feel and sense of the genre the contest and convention were supposedly going for.

What made yours stand out was the fact you went above and beyond, and made a scene -- it wasn't just a kaiju, it was a kaiju attack. It had a lot of life to it.

Thanks! The most consistent criticism and advice for improvement always seems to focus on backgrounds. I can honestly say the Baltimore kaiju attack picture was the first where the background was part of the composition from the start. Something new for me! Got to keep tightening things up. I have more cities planned for when I get more art time. =)

All of the submissions must of made the judges jobs a lot harder for this with such great concepts for Kaiju. Again congratulations for all of the mentioned and thanks to the team/staff who hosted this.

Isn't uploading a picture above FA's size limit and intentionally submitting it again to display it larger than 1280 pixels against the rules? I'd love clarification for my own knowledge. Last I heard, submissions that did that would be removed. Have we dropped that rule?

Yes, it was. I've known artists who've had their submissions removed and given warnings. It seems to be random as to who is punished and who is allowed to bypass the limit, though. That, or as you said, it may not be a rule anymore. I don't see it in the ToS or AUP, but not everything is in there, either. I'd rather get official confirmation before I go uploading large files myself.

From what I have seen this "rule" is selectively enforced and for good reason. Some submissions warrant a higher level of detail or greater resolutions. Better quality, comics, ref sheets, and similar. I think the rule is just there to stop people from uploading 4k mspaint pictures. A lot of people don't understand that sometimes less is more.

With contests you must think on how you may not win at all. Best thing to do is expect not winning. Then it won't hurt as much.

THIS!!!! Reading the "sore loser" posts is always a huge turn-off for me; they turn contests into a pity party, both for the people hosting them and the people attending them. Sore losers make the contest holder feel bad that they couldn't make everyone happy, and they take the good attention away from the people who deservedly won and the people congratulating them. If you want to be a sore loser, fine, but you don't have to do it where everyone else is still having fun; take it to your journal. It makes you look like an attention whore or someone looking for buttpats to cheer you up because you "lost". :/

It's a contest, and you're not guaranteed a place. Hopefully you entered the contest because you primarily like drawing, thought the theme was interesting, and wanted to take the opportunity to do something that you really like as a challenge. While a prize is always a nice incentive to get you going, I would hope that the fact that you get to do something cool and show off your skills (and perhaps maybe even get something for it!) would be the bigger factor. Contests are supposed to be fun. If you don't want to "waste your time" with fellow artists, maybe you should just stick to commissions.

Nice! I first caught sight of MegaPoly through this very creature concept. They are really proficient at their craft, and it is nice to see a 3D modeler of their caliber to get recognition! Megapoly's is definitely an interesting monster design! Definitely has that sci-fi "Cloverfield"/"Alien(s)"/"Pacific Rim" feel!

One that stuck out to me a lot was https://www.furaffinity.net/view/13582591/, and I was surprised it didn't place. It was definitely one of my more favorite ones to look at.

Also, and I'm not speaking this way because of any jealousy or spite i have for the winners, but the ones who one I feel didn't understand the term "kaiju" and what it stands for. It means "strange monster" And though we saw some in a way, they were certainly not very original. I just feel that this site doesn't understand the material, and just went with what most Americans view. Which in all honesty, us Americans are boring and unoriginal all and all.

I can see where you are coming from, but this kind of cynical response is to far on the offensive(attacking) side for some people to simply agree.
Understand that not everyone is a master designer nor know every detail of all mythology. Could more research been done? Of course. Unoriginal? A little but there was some kind of exploration in the kaiju realm we know, "Pacific Rim". Are they strange creatures? Defiantly.
Allot of of us never knew what a Kaiju was until Pacific Rim, seeing that name paired with these giants for the first time made that initial identity for us. When we hear Kaiju, we think of those glowing sea monsters from another dimension. There has even been debate from critical fans if the movie got the Kaiju right because it was not there Japanese monsters. At least the movie was creative about it. So then what? FAU asked for Kaiju, They got the kaiju we know. Despite the FAU page giving a bunch of different examples, we polarized the the ones that look more interesting. If this contest came up years before Pacific Rim, people would most likely still not know what kiaju means. Certainly they would do more research on the word and find your favorite old school giants and made designs that fit in there world. But that is not the case, we don't associate Kaiju with them because no one herd them be called that. Ask anyone in public. "whats a kiaju." You would most likely get a response referencing Specific Rim. And I Also doubt that anyone would have heard of King Ghidorah, Gigan, Biollante, Guilala, and Gamera like you talked about in your journal unless they were a affluent Godzilla fan or had interest in TV during 1950's. In fact, It would probably never crossed our minds that the fucking Stay Puff Marshmallow Man was a kaiju, or Kaijin if you want to be specific.

In the movie, they never specifically named each Kaiju. They would always say, "Class 5 Kaiju approaching." In the movies you like they would say "Daimajin" or " ITS GODZILLA!" today, we don't call Godzilla a kaiju, we call him Godzilla. Lets just say that not enough Kaiju association was made.

There are some points you make i do agree with. But your cynically harsh and bias criticism make it difficult. sure, less glowing deep sea monsters would be cool but just addressed everyone on this site incompetent of the concept is not reasonable.

Regardless of whether or not one see's these as good kaiju or bad kaiju, it makes no difference. What I'm getting at, is that more people need to step outside the boundaries of what we all know, and make something new for themselves. In other words, to be creative. And that's something I don't see very much of with these. We have so many talented artists on this site that do nothing more then draw foxes, cats, wolves, and western dragons at the most diverse part. And the people who draw more then that, the people who try to create something new, are shadowed by the talented popufurs that dominate in commissions and staying in trend. I know several people who entered this thing that had brilliant ideas and very unique kaiju, but received no spotlight. Instead, we get a lot of PR wannabe's that to be perfectly honest, are very easy to mistaken from one another. And as for your comment on my offensive approach to this, I only have one thing to say. I'm not taking any sides, I'm being who I am and saying what I wanna say. Because unlike most people who comment on here, I have the will to speak out and critique this art. People deserve better then this, people deserve to learn more about kaiju. And more then that, people should learn to be willing to step outside of the mainstream and give creativity a try. And don't say that some people don't have creativity, because that's bs. Everyone has it, it's just how you use it that makes the difference.

What I take away from your comments is that you want to see more new strange creatures and less macro beast furries. Honestly, I never liked strange creatures like Megalon or Gigan or Megaguirus. The macro aspects and more traditional looking lizards, dinos, dragons, and hydras were more appealing.

I can agree and understand where you're coming from. It's good to have a traditional style to go on. Still, I do think there should be room for some people to stretch out and learn to diversify. Even if some prefer to stay towards the roots of an earlier idea, that's understandable and I respect that. 0vvv0

Remember that us lot very often use our own characters for these Situations.

Take for example my Western-Quadruped Dragon OC. I wanted to stick heavily to it still being Him, (though he didnt have the armour-plates before hand) and while sticking appendages in strange locations is a great idea, I felt it betrayed my OC's nature, so I never added them.

It was also (for me, at least) a catalyst to edit my character itself, as he now displays a portion of his "kaiju"-plates to help identify him, and make him look better...

Although, You do have a valid point. Though, some people take it WAY too far with some of their designs that it just becomes a broken mess...

It's like if you were to join in a vampire art contest and your source material was the twilight movies. Does that make any sense? Also it'd be cool to see the design of character you entered. I don't get much visual indication of much when you tell me you took your western dragon OC and added "plates" to him and put that out as a kaiju. Just saying.

No, I Knew you didnt mean people took the Kaiju thing too - thats just me. Kaiju designs can be great, but taking it too far is, for example so many eyes, or appendages, that they lose usefulness. It looks strange, yes, but sometimes less is more.

No offense, but I just don't see very much difference between the two. Not to mention there isn't many real defining traits to the character that public eye can see let alone be aware of. That was sort of what I was getting at. I wanted it to still be my original character underneath, So of course there isnt much difference as I dont want to step out of my comfort zone totally by wrecking my OC a bit.

(Although, between Old Napther and the Kaiju, there is some differences. But between the Kaiju and the New version of Napther there isnt much besides more plates and now glows... just remember which way he progresses)

I understand you are very strongly-minded on this theme, but, As I mentioned before, a few of these are peoples OCs, and like me, they didnt want to step out of their comfort zone by modifying their OC because it is an Avatar of themselves - They probably didnt want to have extra anything...

As for defining traits, Napther's flame-like stripe has been hugely unique throughout FA. These plates now give him a different Silhouette. And I have seen far simpler designs for characters become Popular, despite them looking more generic than Napther, But again, too much on a character just looks like a mess...

You gave a pretty basic answer so I'm gonna leave you a brief and simple response. Why did you use your OC to begin with? Why not make a character you could modify and mess with specifically for this contest? That way you aren't harming or doing any unwanted modifications of your OC's see?

Because I had this idea to use my character for this picture. I actually was making the picture BEFORE the contest started, so I sort of went with it and submitted in lieu with the contest. The original picture was inspired by a song for Pacific Rim with one of the lyrics being "...When I walk I will Shake the ground" This was the inspiration for making a macro/kaiju verion of my OC.

Well, there are kaiju and daikaiju. Daikaiju fall into the realm of Godzilla and other giant monsters, but the term kaiju itself has become interchangeable for both. However, daikaiju is not generally a well known term, yet kaiju is.

That's understandable. Though you have to admit when people think of either term, they usually are directing it towards giant strange monsters regardless of the meaning, as one could see in this contest. Also I wanna say that I have seen your kaiju for CKC, and that's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about that a bit of this winner's circle is lacking, and that's creativity.

Before condemning so many people, you gotta consider what their motives might be.

Yeah, a bunch of people probably are douchebag assholes. A bunch have no clue what they're talking about. Some may in fact be attention whores who just can't deal with losing anything. Some feel the need to bring up how their opinions are (god forbid!) Different than those of the contest judges. Some whine just for the sake of whining.

But a small, small handful, a teeny minority, may get the urge to spout such things for other reasons. Personally, I think at least one of the entrants is a new, budding artist desperately thirsty for attention to the point where they act the fool to do it. And in other cases, people may have severe confidence issues when it comes to their art, and while they don't expect everyone to fawn over them and praise every doodle they do, they also have never received any accolades whatsoever so a loss is a much bigger deal to them than it may be to you.

Cases...such as my own. I do apologize about my comments up top, and I shouldn't have left them there. But that was in the immediate aftermath of finding out the winners, after I had staked everything on placing in this. Long story short, I told myself I would pony up and go to FAU (after convinving myself I had no business going because I'm not a well-known artist) if I placed and won a registration. Placing would have meant that yes, I did matter and I was worthy of going. But I didn't, and it hurt, so I felt the need to spew.

I've calmed down now, and regret the bit of a tantrum I threw. But in retrospect I just felt the need to point out that yes, the majority may be comprised of babies and jackasses, but just a few of us were truly hurt and said stupid things for what, to us at the time, were legitimate reasons.

At least the winner's an actual monster instead of like DA, which has contests that promise monsters, but the winner ends up being a human in a costume.

They DO have quality monsters, except they never win. The winners usually are just humans in a costume or something similar that usually has no business winning a contest that's SUPPOSED to be for monsters. I'd have to search for examples, though, but I noticed it a lot in both official AND non-official contests. That's why when I make contests, I make it a rule that all entries must not look in any way human, or even be based off of humans. (For example in fakemon contests, anything like Gardevoir or Machamp or anything mostly based off a human would be disqualified.)

This was entered in the official Cute Monster T-Shirt contest, and ended up being one of the winners, despite the fact it's in no way a monster, just a darkly colored human in a patchwork rabbit suit. It had no business being in the contest, let alone WINNING the contest.

There was another one that came to mind considering photo-manipulation involving monsters, there were all these cool pictures of real, honest to god monsters, and once again the winner is a ****ing HUMAN! Just a human in scraggly body paint and nothing else, really.

Also, she didn't win third place, she was one of three winners. Also, there were so many better artists with better monsters that deserved to win more. I don't go by who's "underrated," I go by who I feel deserves to win. I think DA deliberately chose something human because DA hates non-human designs, which is suggested by a lot of their so-called "monster" contests that more often than not are won by pictures of humans.

Well i do see this artist was attacked over it for no reason at all just because it's a human. Though she went outside the box creatively. but she did win and the judges chose her design as one of the winners. Plus the majority on DA is mostly human as well as a lot of professional contests.

Only some people are. Most don't mind. Even the site owner Dragoneer has had to tell people human art is allowed because the artists were having people tell them they couldn't. Nowhere in the AUP does it say "No human art." Some people have griped about photography and pottery, even food someone prepared themselves (all allowed by the AUP) because "it isn't furry." :/

Honestly, those who can draw humans well are doggone good artists, because we're hard to draw "right," probably because we see people everyday and can spot if something is off.

Well there is a human tag for the species as well. Art is art, whether anthro, feral or human. It probably just doesn't tickle their fancy, so they gripe.

If I see human art, honestly I just ignore it. I get peeved when it wins a contest designed for non-humans though, but other than that I just don't look at it. I think people are allowed to draw what they want, even if it is humans. What I don't like, however, are the people who think you should be forced to draw humans because "it makes you a better artist."

You use your own definition of "monster," they used a more open (and dictionary proper) definition. So save for your preference not being chosen, there is no issue here.

I just wish a DA contest would have more contests where the winning entry has little or zero human in their design. I still remember the giant monster contest. ...But then again, I was kind of disappointed by that one too, even though the winner wasn't in any way human. The runner up was this badass water snake with all this cool equipment (hard to explain) and the one that one was just a mountain with legs and a small mouth. It was still incredibly well drawn, though.

Not really. I see them mostly as humans with super-powers. ...Well, Dracula, anyway. Zombies and mummies are undead humans, Frankenstein's Monster is a human created from the remains of other humans. Werewolves are humans who can shape-shift into non-humans. The wolf form itself is non-human. The creature from the black lagoon... no, that's definitely a monster.

Meh, when it comes to monsters and non-humans, I generally don't go by official definitions, and pretty much exclude things that look like humans.

Yeah, I do kind of wish they would fix that. I also kind of wish they fixed an error where when you view a picture you faved, and click out of it, sometimes the picture gets unfaved.

In a contest, they have to allow the most entries that fit within the definition in the rules. Barring a rule against humanoid monsters, they need to include them. So the contest wasn't exclusively for non human monsters.

And to cut down the replies, DA has human art in a greater proportion to even here, so it makes sense they wouldn't alienate their userbase. It would be like a contest here excluding anthro.

In closing, the judges judged. Some people will dislike it. Shrug and move on to the next contest.

You're arguing over a "cute monster" t shirt contest for goodness sake. You obviously dislike human characters. We get it. But humanoid monsters are monsters. Just not your cup of tea. It doesn't mean they're not monsters. Heck, go back to tribal and medieval lore and you'll find plenty of humanoid monsters. Medusa, some nagas, harpies, sirens. Look at Hollywood films of recent history...Freddy Krueger...Jason Voorhees...Species...Alien (the H.R. Geiger ones). Maybe not as "monstrous" in the minds of some, but still monsters in their own unique way.

The human monster is a growing genre. If anything, maybe you can convince them to have a separate contest for non humanoid monsters.

In fact, with the Cute monster contest, that was one of the only human monsters in the entire contest, and there were better artists that used real non-human monsters, yet it still ended up being one of the winners. I understand if complaining about that stuff is annoying, but can you really blame someone for being annoyed by it? It really does get frustrating at times when exactly what you don't want to see win a contest wins constantly.

I wonder if you understand Kaiju, or some of the premises behind them and the lore? One factor is, many Kaiju are designed to be a "human in a suit". In fact, many of the monsters in both Pacific Rim and Gozdilla2014 were strictly designed around that basic premise. It's really neat to read the history of Kaiju and how they've evolved in modern media.

If you want a crazy beast that no human could ever suit in, or puppet, then you don't want a Kaiju.

My reason for commenting what I did was to critic the art that had won. Why? Because if nobody was to speak their mind on an art piece, even if it may not be what most would agree with, then where can there be improvement? I understand that maybe not many people on here understand kaiju very much, so I propose that someone encourages further exploration of these things so that those who learn, can open up to the possibilities that lie beyond what they may be aware of. I believe we can do better then this, and that we can dish out things that would put this to shame. Yes, this. Please step outside of the box and create fantastic ideas. There's so much more out there! One drawing usually doesn't cut it for making up creatures. Draw hundreds until you get something that stands out more. Art is about experimenting and not settling with the first idea that pops up.

Saying 'The character's arm looks a bit off at the forearm" is critique, saying "I like how so and so draws bodies and characters and anyone that doesn't draw it this way is wrong/bad/unoriginal" or "I don't like how they based this character off this character (which is friggen silly considering that's just their personal preference. Though, seeing the comments and reviews on the results, I am a little curious. Is the picking biased towards gloss and expensive programs, or is it based on talent and creativity?

By no means am I claiming these artists to have no talent or creativity though, those pieces are incredibly astonishing.

To me I've always viewed Photoshop or multihundred paid-for programs to be an unfair advantage. Not everyone can buy, or pirate if you're that way, a program like that.

Not saying Photoshop shouldn't be allowed either, people are skilled with whatever they use. It surely is a wonderful tool, though I've seen contests before where some people have the best of all creativity, things I'd like to see brought to life in the theater, only to be trampled by the most polished of unoriginal things.

I feel its comparable to the gaming industry these days. Things like CoD and Battlefield are fun to some people, but its always the same damn game. Things like Minecraft though, it doesn't have the best of graphics (unless you get Optifine and even a 32x texture pack), but gameplay is so varied from world to server that you never run out of things to do, and never run out of neat ideas. And each update gives the game a whole new vibe each time, rather than new guns this and better graphics that.

Congrats to all the winners once again though, you all truly deserve to be in your positions!

Well it's more like the skill of the user that depends on the program. Though most others do traditional drawing which to be honest would be something you should really do since i've noticed your gallery.

I used MyPaint. MyPaint is free. I don't think the software determines what an artist can do. People do crazy stuff with mspaint. Photoshop is just a tool, nothing more.

Also, Thanks for the comedy gold on here guys and girls. It simply wouldn't be FA without SOME drama floating around or the butt-hurts coming out of the woodwork.
