just concentrate on the good of what humanity does and try to preserve it in yourself. The selfish types will fade away sooner or later as the world changes.

The world is shit, that much is true. But make everyday better than the last, and things will become enjoyable. Instead of being grumpy, give a smile. Maybe then the next person who sees you can smile as well. Then you would have just set off a chain reaction of happiness, making the world just a bit better. Happened to me once. :3

I don't really know the answer to this one either. I think a lot of the time I try not to think about it. I know that can be seen as ignorant, but at this stage in my life I don't feel there's much I can do to help the situation, and me feeling depressed and miserable about it won't help either. So I guess my advice is that you should do something about it if you feel you can - even if that "something" is just raising awareness - otherwise allow yourself to switch off sometimes. It's not really ignorance; it's learning to cope with the knowledge of things that you can't change.

I understand that anything is better than nothing, and more people need to realise the value even small acts can have - or just rouse themselves to act at all. However, I believe that in order to best take care of others we need to first be able to take care of ourselves. If someone is at a point where they're burnt out or otherwise need to focus on getting their own life in order, I think they have to realise it's okay to let themselves do that. Hence, do something if you can, but try not to beat yourself up and be miserable if you can't. Sometimes it's okay to switch off and focus on one's more immediate concerns.

You sound like a very selfless and giving person, and I admire that. Please know that I would never take the attitude of your old scouting friend in your above comment. I think it's excellent that you were willing to leap into action, and I applaud you for doing so even if it ultimately caused you significant inconvenience and discomfort. I hope you were at least able to satisfy yourself with the knowledge that you acted selflessly and without hesitation when you were called upon.
I do hope though, that you are able to find some equilibrium and the ability to tend to your own needs, in a more general sense. It sounds as though you both deserve it and could use it.

There's so many bad things happening in the world and truly money is the root of it. Religion and politics simply know how to use the power of money for their own selfish agenda. Truly, one cannot say that it is the fault of religion and politics but rather it is man itself. Man has always been flawed, look at our history, and all the struggle we have gone through to this point.

How is this any different than another era within our time? You have to do what you can that is infront of you. If you feel that religion and politics are eroding the world, you should volunteer and work towards making some sort of difference. Perhaps what we need are more voters to change a broken system. Or we need someone to realize that there is a better faith to follow or operate.

Either way, I feel the volunteering is the solution on you end because it truly does make a difference when you're out there engaging with like-minded people who perhaps thought never existed in your community.

Anyway, just a thought, an opinion. These people cannot go on living forever, eventually there will be a time when a new generation decides to take over.
