Lyre City Worldbuilding: Medical magic
Hi,
Medical Magic
Magic is a thing that exists in the Lyre City world. It gets hushed over a lot but there are those who are aware of its presence. Aside from the supernatural things like Tirta and his gang, Ace Fountain Repair, and whatnot, there are those in the more mainstream that are aware of the existence of the supernatural. And nowhere is this more true than within the medical community.
The medical community has two faces. One is the face shown to the public. This admits no knowledge of magic. Any time things get close to that they switch over to thick walls of technobabble to dissuade the curious.
The other side is the side that knows magic is a thing. These people study magic carefully and treat it more or less as something that works, but that they don't understand. They seek to understand as much as they can as that makes it more useful, and less dangerous.
A spell in the Lyre City world is a fickle thing. It must always have a way to break it. And they can behave unpredictably at times. So the medical community likes to keep any healing type magics small, with short lifespans, usually administered in the form of a potion given in the guise of a pharmaceutical.
And they try to offset this with as much practical scientific knowledge as possible.
Disease is a relatively rare thing. There are heavy disease specialist mages who categorize illnesses and work to contain and irradicate any new illness that crops up amongst the population. And they are usually quite effective with it. It is a constant battle, however, as the unpredictably of magic prevents any single blanket cure or methodology from working. Each new illness is a fight from scratch.
This is quite useful for those in the sexiness department, as it means STD's are a non-thing. Pregnancy is still a bit of an issue. But there are a variety of techniques to combat unwanted pregnancy. There are spell-pills that both males and females take. Females are heat management (heat is a thing for furs in this world. And a woman being in heat can be dangerous for her (or even those about her) so such things are common). It is a small leap from there to advance it to prevent eggs developing all together.
Males have pills as well that cease sperm production. There are still exceptions. 'Sexual health' visits to the doctor are usually an annual thing for any fur entering puberty, bi-annual starting in late 20's, and by the 30's it moves to five years. Mainly it's about making sure the fur in question is on the best possible med (spell) combination to keep them healthy (from getting pregnant or getting anyone else pregnant).
Most furs who are interested in becoming pregnant speak with a professional about getting off the meds before doing so. (It can be a challenge.)
