It's definitely possible. Indie dev's have done it before. No small or easy task and it takes a bit of luck. You have to have an idea or concept that's fun with a look and feel that catch peoples attention. It's a bit of luck with proper advertisement or coverage from gaming news sites. Kickstarter can help and about 50k. That's around the average cost for an indie game I think.
I dunno im am very plan thinking xD but im slow to act. I was thinking of forming a group in which we all would work on something and share the earning.
worked free lance for 4 years scrapped it last year had think a bout things and got a fully time job in something completely different
to be honest i was working well leading up to the year i scrapped on okish pay for project work and enjoyed it finished my last project doing some 3D model work fixing character and such.
then i had nearly a entire year of no work , pretty bad ,good job i still kept weekend job from uni :)
Done some Game Design classes I went to the hospital and the Art Institute stole my tuition and told me not to come back. Heard many more horror stories like it. That school can burn in hell. It was designs mind you, not whole finished games. I didn't get far enough to have the coding and animation classes. I've done well with my voice acting and sound designs though.
