Summer Nationals Tour Report (The Offspring/Bad Religion)
As I feel myself lacking in the Journal department around FA I wanted to do get back in the habit by doing a full blown concert report!
Yesterday I got to experience one of the most kickass shows I've ever been too. The Summer Nationals Tour. Basically it was a full punk rock show, with 2 of my most favorite punk rock groups I've listened to since middle school AS THE FREAKING HEADLINERS! The Offspring and Bad Religion!
This whole event took place at the OKC Downtown Airpark. This place has been growing exponentially over time with more concerts since the spring. I even heard Mayhem Fest (Giant Metal festival) happened 2 weeks ago there. Usually most of those shows happen at the Zoo Amphitheater downtown, but from what I've experienced I was actually THANKFUL that they moved. There was so many things wrong with how the Zoo Amp had things set up that I don't want to fully go over in this journal. Regardless, the Airpark is gorgeous and I hope to see more progress with them in the future.
Anyway, The show itself started around 6:30pm. I got there hella early because I really didn't want to miss anything. Everyone was starting to hunger for the overpriced beer and concessions that they had all over the place. The first band that played was "Stiff Little Fingers". I haven't heard of them previously since yesterday. Apparently they're a band from Ireland that have been playing since 1977. Their set was pretty cool. They had a song that sounded partly like a reggae song at first but then got into a heavy punk riff later on. Everyone was just listing to them though, not a lot of energy from the crowd but the band was happy.
Next up was Pennywise. I have heard of these guys partly through high school but I've never listened to them. These guys were BIG on crowd participation. I didn't know the words to their songs but hell I head banged at some of their stuff. I kinda liked their song "Fuck Authority" though. That got a big mosh going to the side. THEY ALSO COVERED "FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT" BY BEASTIE BOYS. That was pretty freaking epic! I wasn't expecting that at all!
Bad Religion was next! I never thought in my entire life I would ever see these guys play live! Especially in Oklahoma of all places! I think Greg Graffin the lead singer said they haven't visted Okc in 35 years!!! It was my absolute mission to see them before I die and sure enough They DO NOT Disappoint! They played a couple of my favorite songs from them. "Infected", "I Want to Conquer the World" , "Anesthesia" , "Struck a Nerve" They ended with "American Jesus" I went fucking insane! As awesome as the whole thing was the night wasn't over!
Last but not least, The Offspring got to play. Half of the crowd was pretty shit faced. There was a huge smell of Mary Jane in the air. Everyone was screaming their heads off! They played the entire Smash album from start to finish! I actually got pushed into the mosh pit when "Bad Habit" played. I was trying to fight my way out, but damn it got out of control. This was the first time they played the entirety of that Album in Oklahoma. I was so grateful I got to be a part of it. After they played the final song from the Album which was "Self Esteem" but they were saving that for last anyway, they played more of their other hit songs. " Why don't you get a job?" "Pretty Fly (for a white guy)" "All I want" "Your'e gonna go far kid" and ended with "The Kids Aren't alright"
I was pretty damn sore after everything, but I was so glad I got to see these guys in action before I leave this earth. Here is to many more years of music to come in the future!
