Closed Species

I like them, I find the different stories/attributes/looks in general to be really neat, but lately I've noticed people thinking any species is closed, even when it's been said to be open.
Using DeletetheStars and RaptorSlut here to keep things simple.
Raptorslut's Bowbun species is an open species (Because lets be real here, it's literally a rabbit anthro with a bow accessory, and no backstory to be heard of- You can't really call that 'closed'), however I'll see the occasional arts others have drawn labeling it a 'closed species'
Or DeletetheStars has gotten notes inquiring if they're allowed to use her headless species design (That one headless dragon boy she sold a week ago), or inquiring about her "closed species" bicorn adopts, or adopts she used to make a LONG time ago. When told they can make one themselves and don't need permission from her because they're not closed, people are amazed and excited! But it's like... a headless trait isn't new, you've got the Headless Horseman and Dullahan, and much, much more. The bicorns are just unicorns with wings on their butt, and not closed, and all Ryn's old species were.... harpies, dragons, raptors, shrimp, dogs, etcetc- all of which you can't stake claim on because... well, those are either real animals, or mythological creatures that have been around forever.
Not really sure what I'm trying to say here, because I definitely don't mind closed species (Hell, I've had my hand in a few), but it's just kinda sad to see people asking permission if they're allowed to draw something they shouldn't be barred from?
Yes, you're allowed to draw a rabbit who wears a bow, and put wings on everyone's butts. Remove their heads while you're at it. /o/

can i hug this?
i complete understand this and i love the way you used some examples as to what open and closed species are,
some people don't understand and others are just like 'IM CLOSING EVERYTHING! DONT DRAW IT!'
And yeah, I mean, I'm not the closed adopt police, so if someone wants to make a closed species that's literally a rabbit in a hat, by all means go for it? But they'll end up with more stress than needed when they start barking at the magic industry with all their bunny in hat shenanigans.
I get that a lot in regards to a few races in my comic. Especially the Cubi which are pretty much just "wings on head" and "wacky shapeshifting abilities and wings that can get all tentacle-y" I don't really consider any aspect of the race unique, and even the combination of all the traits isn't something I would say is so original that it warrents being a species unto itself. But I get a lot of folks who ask if it's alright to make a cubi character because they think the race belongeth to me. And its like "nah man. Staple wings to whatever you want and go nuts" cause really, it's not like them making characters is gonna affect the comic itself so who am I to say folks can't have fun with the concept.
It does make me go "oh u" when I see folks who are making like...a bear with antlers and going "closed species". XD
They do have a story to them (Ala comic form), and various different aspects to them, so I could understand people wanting to get the a-okay from you first :0
And yeah 6u9; I've seen a literal feral tiger that breaths fire that's a 'closed species', but at the same time... if people are willing to pay, then kudos I suppose. It's just the issue of everyone thinking certain ideas are closed when they're not. One can't tell someone, 'no you're not allowed to put wings on your characters hips', or, 'no you cannot lop off your characters head,'
Now if it was a closed species and someone said, 'no you can't do this'(IE: No you can't give your StarDragon one gold eye, one silver eye, and your gem can be red), that'd make more sense? Because hey that species has lore you need to go by, but you can't tell someone not to give their character a bow accessory.
I hope this makes sense.
Though I have yet to make one for myself.. oops
I want one.
But that also involves doing things, and I know your troubles, friend.
I ask because not everyone feels the same way and even if I ask I give credit where it is due. :3
idk, it's a headless bat species that's filled with candy and they're called Trickersqueaks, and it haunts houses that don't give candy on Halloween //SHRUG, and you're like wow headless things are neat! I want my ....bird character to be headless! You don't have to ask to make them headless, headlessness is not (C) Trickersqueaks.
Now if you saw Trickersqueaks and you were like oh! I want to make a candy designed bat whose head pops off and they haunt houses in general- thennnnn that's crossing boarders.
There is a difference between taking vague ideas you enjoy (Hey, I like the gem idea for the StarDragons/Hey, I like the colors on this/Hey, I like the wing placement on that)
And ripping off a species all together (Hey I like the gems on the StarDragons... and the names, and the ears, and the paws, and the anatomy, and the- etcetc... Hell, I can name two StarDragon ripoffs off the top of my head)
I forgot if I made a journal on this or not, on the topic of copying someones style. Ever since I got into art, and met other artists, I've always heard it's okay to copy traits or styles of another artist. I know it's not noticeable... at all, lol, but I've actively tried to yoink Ryn's style. But it has helped me get progressively better? You learn different ways to make the anatomy connect, or the body move, or how to get BOTH EYES TO LOOK RIGHT, OR HOW TO DRAW HANDS MY GOD HOW ARE HANDS DRAWN, but I've seen a few people actually bark about not liking when people do such a thing. So I suppose that's something to worry about 6u9;
Ugh... it says something when you can think of ripoffs right off the top of your head and can name them. >= A =< I try not to copy something that's out there... If I'm creating something I make sure to only look at real animals or straight from my head as reference that why I can't accidentally or on purpose duplicate something someone else make. I just doodle and go... well what would I like to see? And then go from there. Often I use a theme. :x If those themes match someone else... >; A ;< woops....
It's sad because one was actually called out by people who weren't us, and they were taken down for a long time... but now they're back, and no one has said anything. Both of them have been around for a while now so we feel rude to just be like, 'UHHHMMM HEEEYYY.......', but at the same time it's like... you use the name, horns, gems, ears, big paws, hip fluff, and dragon all in one species, so we're kiiinnddaaa like yo, this is no coincidence.
Stardragons down © big paws, ears, hip fluff, etcetc of course, but when you take ALL OF THAT and put it on another species, it has us squinting.
