Well don't forget his last two films were inland empire and mulholland drive.

Inland Empire was purely experimental but still quite good, Mulholland Drive is arguably one of the best modern films of the current era.

Twin Peaks was his baby and he's always dreamed of bringing it back. I see no reason to think his appearance on american dad should have anything to do with anything. A guys gotta pay the bills.
