It happens.. a lot.

I think they do it in the hopes of getting people to follow them - which rarely happens. It's more likely to get existing watchers to unwatch them, so when they come back, they can be even more miserable! The sad thing is that some people don't learn the first time, and do the same thing again and again.

Either to follow them or just to pity them and stroke their egos.

I've always thought that if you need to go, just go. No ceremony, no BS, just maybe a note to let folks know where you went, but that's all.

No drama, no one really cares.

As for people that use the word 'forever', I expect you'll keep your word. If you say you are leaving FA and the fandom FOREVER, don't dare come back. I understand a break, I get that some people move on, etc. Just don't pull that card unless you mean it. I can't stand people that break their word, and that's what that is if you say the f word.

If you're going to Weasyl because X or whatever, go. Your reasons are unimportant. If you feel a certain way towards this site, the reality is here is where most of the money is. You can take that or leave it. You can have your principles, but if you don't like the way the government is run you have three options. Take it, leave it, or change it. That's it.

As for the conning people out of money by faking illness/death/alien abduction, don't blame the fandom. That shit happens all the time all over the world, the Internet just makes it easier. Shit, they had a guy on Dr. Phil get catfished on Facebook so hard he ignored his RL wife who was dying of cancer to talk to this lonely 60+ woman claiming to be a rich young Kennedy heir and she died believing her husband loved this complete stranger more than her. Needless to say he was really pissed when Dr. Phil's investigation revealed the truth, but the damage to his family and reputation was done.

Well Seaweed, you've been around furry as long as I do to know this is nothing new.

Around, let's say 10 years ago, the big thing was to whine on the newsgroups ALF or AFF, or later the mIRC servers furnet and yiffnet "I'm leaving furry forever!!"... and then mysteriously come back months... weeks... sometimes days later.

It's no different really, except now the message gets complicated. "I'm leaving FA forever and going to (fill in the blank Deviantart/Weasyl/Inkbunny)!" Few months later, quietly return and not say a word.


TL:DR... this crap isn't something new. It's existed ever since I first came into furry, and will keep happening.
