My Picks for the Best and Worst of the Ninth Doctor
11 years ago
The Good: Chris Eccelston makes for a very good doctor, a perfect blend of eccentric and grumpy--in short he was very close to being Hartnell and I appreciate that. There was also a focus on what happens when a companion vanishes off the face of the earth that I really liked. It was a subject that was never shown in the original Who.
The Bad: The effects, I am glad that the effects have improved and that the CG have been cut back in the later shows. But here it was rampant and distracting.
Most Recommended Serials:
Dalek: It is rare that I enjoy a Dalek episode, this one had morality lessons, and that made this a top pick.
The Empty Child: Creepy, historic, this episode felt like a classic doctor who episode, just with more gay.
Least Recommended Serials:
World War Three: Anything with the Slitheen in it is just awful. Fart jokes, comedic aliens, almost everything about this serial was horrid. Almost. I'm giving a special commendation to actress Penelope Wilton for her portrail of Harriet Jones, she brings a lot of heart to the episodes and I hope to see her in the series again.
The Long Game: A critic on the way journalism is handled, which could have been good except that all the characters in this are horrible people. A shame, with talent like Simon Peg and Tamsin Greig (Black Books) you'd hope the serial could be salvaged.
Almost Great:
Bad Wolf: I will give this one a nod for the simple sending off of Christopher Eccelston--it was emotional enough without being overwrought. You didn't know he was dying until the last three minutes of the series. More regenerations should be this way.
