is having a drunken group orgy in custom made mascot suits a rite of passage?
do you just make a jumpsuit out of an old rug, wear it, and just become a furry?

It's a label that one takes for oneself, bestowed (or denied) by others or by a group. Either way, it's just that - a label.
So nah, you shouldn't really care, and it shouldn't matter. Labels are great for explaining stuff to others as sort of a communal thing, but they're not quite as useful when you get down to a personal level, because everyone is different.
