What does it mean to be furry
I have in the past written journals of a similar theme. Curious as to peoples thoughts and inputs however I think this time I have something that is a bit more in depth.
What does it mean to be a furry to you? Is it a perversion? A passing Fad that youll grow out of? Is it spiritual or is it a lifestyle to you? The fandom as a whole can be defined in a vast spectrum of different ways and Im curious as to what ways the people who watch me, or the people who just happen to stumble across this journal view the meaning of being a furry.
To me when I started it was a passing curiosity. Something I kept hidden mainly only interested in the adult side of things. I was young, and its likely expected and true for a lot of people. Porn is not exactly some unheard of crazy thing amongst us now is it? However as time passed and I grew older that curiosity shifted it grew deeper and took root, I found much more meaning in what being a furry was to me. I started to express myself more, I let it in to more of my life to be more open about it. And I dont think thats a bad thing Furries to me are open minded, Creative, Its the ability to accept people for not only who they are NOW but who they wish to be.Its kind of ironic that we who get accused of hiding behind our characters, tend to be the most openly honest about ourselves a good portion of the time.
Is there Drama? Oh gods yes; Are there negative sides to it? of course there are, but such arguments can apply to anything and everything and just because a select few cause an issue it shouldnt reflect on the whole as "The Fandom". To me being a furry became more a lifestyle a conscious decision to live my life a certain way and through that I have met some incredibly interesting people. As well as some of the best friends I could have ever imagined having. To me this is what being a furry is, Its a lifestyle, hell its My Life, Im pushing almost 9 years of having been in the fandom and at this point.. I can no longer imagine NOT having it as a part of me and I wouldn't want it any other way.
I understand not everyone is going to agree with this, But thats kind of the point isnt it? Were not all the same and its through different views that we learn more. So I'd love to hear your personal opinions about what it means to be a furry.

Mix of fun perversion and ways to meet people with a common interest. I use the community as a method of meeting new folks that I can immediately feel a bit more comfortable with because there's something shared. It provides an outlet for creativity in some weird things and encouragement to do those. So, sort of a hobby, I guess? I strongly suspect I'll become less active in the community as time goes by, though I don't think I'll ever fully leave it. Though if I had some dire need to, I could leave it. I don't invest as much as a lot of other people into it.
I treat it like a nice car. It's fun to drive and I can get a lot of miles out of it, but I'm a separate entity and could get out and walk away if it just broke down or I got into a wreck or something. And while I drive carefully, for that same reason, I install plenty of ablation and airbags to keep anything from hurting me.
Oh and I wouldn't say that there's a "select few" giving us a bad name. Having gone to a number of conventions and around that proverbial block once or twice it's a far cry from one or two. I'm not talking about the ones who actually are socially awkward. There are plenty of creepers who try to use that to pass off their predatory behavior and a great number who can't seem to grasp basic hygiene or that no means no. It's still a minority of furs, however. But it isn't negligible.
I still love it, though. Things got a lot better once I stopped bothering feeding all the histrionic drama machines at F-Chat (though I'm sure they're everywhere). I just sort of wish them the best and mentally pull out whenever someone starts up a (rather practiced sounding) sob story, which seems the be among the most typical targeted type. I weather the rest of the argumentative type by just not paying attention X3
I use the fursona now to classify, I'm not saying this is right, as that will start a argument. "Furries are people that adopt fantasy persona related to animals, generally imaginary anthropomorphic ones" Defy the rule, I probably won't consider you a furry, become spiritual about it and I will probably start analyzing you for trauma, mental disorders, social persuasion etc. But I do the same for any Religious/Spiritual belief.
