opinions/critique on my charr
11 years ago
I want to get better at charr since I tend to get lots of commissions with them. I know my anatomy is kinda shit and Im still learning. Is there anything I should fix? with style? idk. My self esteem is pretty low right now and cant figure out what I need to do to fix it so please help ;_;

Anatomy is our everyday fight T_T
Hope that might help.
I suppose there are on occasion a couple of anatomical issues, but that could perhaps be solved by doing some more anatomy practices. Perhaps following a guide or even an anatomy book.
And I mean, your drawing of Maara is still my favourite picture of her by far! Maybe that makes me biased but y'know, I really love what you do.
If you think something should be changed perhaps you should experiment with a different style entirely. Approach things in a completely new way. I'm not really an artist, so I unfortunately cannot give you much more than a general suggestion or idea like this.
I won't comment if more musculature is needed because I'm a total slut for that and would absolutely say yes to that regardless of whether that's actually needed or not. xD
I tend to prefer interpreted/indirect realism and/or stylized pictures personally, mostly because seeing something "of the artist" in the art is kinda the best part about it. It's what makes it special.
Another thing is, you should go the way it's most comfortable to you (I mean, since you get commissioned with charr so much, that's a good sign you are good at them, right? ;3)
You COULD experiment a bit (like, i love your sketching style, so maybe try colored sketches? They have so much life which is sometimes lost after lining)
However, if you wanted to improve on your skills with that anatomy you could probably try just a general anatomy book (or even a class if you were feeling adventuresome). While charr don't exist in our world they have been created using animals from it as building blocks. You may benefit from gaining knowledge about those building blocks.
I highly recommend watching Proko's video series for foundation drawing techniques, starting with "How to draw the head from any angle" = http://youtu.be/1EPNYWeEf1U
Also, take your own photo references for all of your art before you start working. If that's not feasible, get as many good online refs of humans in those poses that you can find. Looking at a real body for reference is not only less stressful but also a necessity for professional work. It's not worth hours of guesswork.
To get some hours of practice in, use the "30 second pose generator" on http://www.posemaniacs.com/ to do gesture drawings for 10-15+ minutes a day. Work from 15 second gestures up to 1 minute.
Hope this helps, good luck!
