But one thing that isn't too recent but still applies, The Charlie Hebdo incident.
My standing on the issue is, nobody should have been killed. The families of those killed don't deserve to go through this. But people are hailing Charlie Hebdo as a type of martyr. As if the cartoons blatant racism is heroic. Though the people who killed those in the incident should be charged as all people who kill should be. But that still doesn't making all the racism and islamophobia acceptable or even okay.
Its disgusting how much people are clinging to this to plead the right of free speech, hiding behind the law just to justify that racism is JUST as valid as any other type of speech. Meanwhile a rapper visiting France, tried to talk about the racism in the country and was kicked out because of it. Not by people but by the government, oh ya free speech hm ye. Free speech is only given if you're white and atheist or catholic.
I'm sorry but I am just fuming at this.
I am just hhhh, there are so many other things you can support if you'd like to support free speech. And its not supporting racism companies, but minorities who can't express themselves because of race or religion. Like how muslim women were afraid to were their hijabs outside because of the incident or some didn't even leave their house because they were so afraid.
Just I know that the furaffinity community is for the most part white, so please like know stuff about this more and question it yknow. I could find some articles for ya if you'd like or link you to some poc stories.
I should also clarify, I am white and I am atheist. So I don't have personal experience with racism or islamophobia so I won't know intimate details about how it goes down and please don't ask me to explain my side of racism because I benefit from it.
just hhhhng okay Im done being a baby

I can't say I liked what they drew, neither did I like what happened to the artists. The racism could have been avoided, the killing could have been avoided. Neither of the two did a good thing.
I am also white and an atheist, so there's that, lol.
nobody should have died, but that magazine shouldn't have been published
people can do that stuff on their blog and all that, but no person should have to see that kind of hate speech on the magazine rack when they're walking, validating it and invalidating them :I
they see ugly racist caricatures from the racist right wing.... and ugly racist caricatures from satirists who are 'defending' them
at the end of the day, it's all just racial stereotypes drawn by white guys to prove their particular point
classic case of them shouting over minorities orz
why is it that people are so willing to stand for people who negatively represented a minority in the name of freedom of speech, but not for people who want to put positive representation out there?
and lots of people who don't think the fact that Charlie Hebdo cartoonists were largely white and male as making a difference to their message orz
support people whose rights are taken from them, like muslims who can't wear their garbs because they're afraid or help somebody whose black get their voice against racism out there more
there just way better things to support than this poop :I
my bff who is a muslim with like so much hijab swag it's unreal
had to take her hijab off in france because she was AFRAID FOR HER SAFETY
as in, guys kept acting sexually aggressive towards her threatening 'corrective rape' and stuff, and threats of violence and the lot
the white western world has so many issues tbh orz
the western world and europe realllyyy needs to take a sit down and chill, tho thats an understatement of the century

orz
how can people seriously not see how hypocritical this is
and yet that new sniper movie in America is also still going on
what is even happening
then someone goes 'um excuse me that's racist'
i hate the term "exercising free speech" because going around intentionally upsetting people by showing something their religion abhors is just ???
and it's not like free speech is some "use it or lose it" muscle... it's there all the time you don't have to give it a workout to keep it in shape
whoo ye did my morning stretches now gonna insult a few people to complete it
you've made really great points. I just feel bad for not paying as much attention, I mean, you wanna know something funny (it's not really funny I guess but ok) I JUST learned about this incident like a few days ago and it's only because I saw "je suis charlie" randomly a few times and I was like what is that a brand name or something?? >>; I just happened to be curious enough to look it up and I was like wow ok so SOME SERIOUS SHIT WENT DOWN ON THE 7TH holy fuck. I dunno. I don't watch the news...tbh I'm still fucking depressed over the Mike Brown incident. I just. idk I started watching this "Cop Block" page on fb after that and just...you know they report on like corrupt cops, people being unjustly killed by cops, cops having too much power and abusing it etc...I see all this shit and it just makes me want to puke. I'm too depressed. the world is so fucked up.
but I have been really preoccupied with family matters, you know, 2 recent deaths and I'm sorry world w all your problems but family comes first. and it's just been really emotionally draining I can't handle this..other stuff, racism and hatred over religion- I can't fucking deal with it. just...WHY. goddamnit.
you are right tho, you are SO RIGHT. like everything you said is exactly what I would say too. honestly I didn't read all that much about this deal (just skimmed the wikipedia article) but yes free speech is important of course, and no one should ever be MURDERED over WORDS they say or a fucking cartoon or whatever, that's like the worst damn reason to take someone's life...BUT. apparently these people (?) were putting out cartoons or something offensive to Muslims? that is NO REASON to slaughter them, of course, but still, STILL, people shouldn't flat out disrespect others' religions on purpose and make a joke of them (if that is in fact that was going on?) again not a reason to kill over, but....it's just a lame thing to do.
I mean, I'm an atheist too (I GUESS, for simplicity's sake yeah like I don't believe in like..a personal god or anything- whatever) and I used to be kindof a dick about it (mainly towards christianity) but that was because I was resentful, I guess I was mad bc I was basically brainwashed as a kid to believe in that stuff, and I just made the mistake (!) of trying to get "closer to God" as a christian and ASKED QUESTIONS (oops lol). the more questions I asked and the more I READ about it all...it just didn't add up lol. but I guess I was kinda mad for awhile that I was lead to believe in it all in the first place and yeah I was kinda one of those "militant atheists" for awhile. not anymore tho.
nah...I just have gotten older and thought about it all a lot more you know- I understand where religious people are coming from and I even envy them sometimes, I wish I could believe there was like an all-good, all-powerful being watching over me and everything but I can't. but I see why some people need that and how they come to believe it and everything and honestly I don't think any less of them for it. long as they don't act hateful to me just bc I don't believe what they do and we're cool.
ANYWAY. sorry about the long rant lol. but it's true, people need to see THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS, the other factors, the racism and predjudice against Muslims, that's very important and I didn't even think about it honestly, I just read a little and was like oh great more religious extremism e_e but I'm very glad you posted this bc like... "some didn't even leave their house because they were so afraid." <- that's fucked up, it should not be that way and that's a consequence to consider for sure :/
well I just wanna say one more thing okay, and that is, try not to get overwhelmed by all this bs going on in the world ok?? I mean think about it like 200 or even just 100 years ago it took longer to hear about stuff going on across the globe you know, but today we get all this info like INSTANTLY, but you know horrible shit has been going on for like EVER it's just that now we SEE EVERYTHING like right away so it makes it seem like things are much worse than they really are, I think. I just feel like that's something to consider at least, when it seems like the world is really bad you know...I'm glad you posted this tho. you made me think about it more and consider something I didn't at first and I'm glad, thank you. and like I said, this sort of thing is mature and it's good that you're paying attention and thinking, you are NOT being a baby okay you're just great <3
you shouldn't feel bad though, I mean I didn't really know about it at all either. At least before I didn't really follow racism or police things but thats just cause I didn't even know it existed ;c once I started to learn about it tho I did start to get a bit more involved and learnt about other injustices I wouldn't have noticed otherwise since they things that doesn't affect me
I'm really sorry that its taking a hard toll on you tho, when it starts to get m down I like to think of the strong people that are fighting for causes, like the strong black women at the front lines of protests and leading it or the people who offered to help muslim women get to work so they'd feel more safe, those parts help a lot
also tho if there are protests in your area that you could go to I'd reccomend that too, it really shows you how many people are behind it and also helps <:
oh no ye tho the Charlie Hebdo magaazine were putting out islamophobic, sexist and racist cartoons, like pretty offensive stuff
yaa as a teenager I was definitely like a little angry white atheist boy, like blaming religion for war and all that but nope I'm so glad I stopped being like that haha
mhmm tho ya I agree, people should be able to believe what they'd like, tho I'm not really envious since I'm happy with what I have for myself lol but I'm definitely happy for others that they are happy with their religious choices too
aa and nah its fine tho : D with the rising neo nazi's and nationalists in europe its incredibly concerning and I'm hoping theres a way to stop it and make the parties fall apart
i live in canada so there isn't much reach I can do from here really ;c
nah tho I'm fine with things like it overwhelming me, I kind of learned stuff once the Mike Brown murder happened and I followed it really heavily like the stuff I mentioned to ya and just to lie down if I start to feel anxious uvu
no ya I just kind of wish there was more I could do I guess, I'm on my tumblr a lot so petitions will pop up so I try to do those when I can
I'm really happy it brought something new to you tho!! but ya tho just reminding myself of the strong people in the front lines of all this just kind of helps with it and its really inspiring too haha
aha I just felt weird bringin this kind of stuff to furaffinity even tho I mention it lots on my tumblr haha
