And another Kaffre journal!
While I haven't quite given up on the idea of getting some artwork done this week, I do have some things I wanted to talk about, but none of which seemed sufficient to warrant a journal on its own. I hope you'll bear with me:
First, I'm curious how people feel about my Kaffre talks Candy feature? It was fun and I have a few more installments lined up, but am increasingly having trouble finding new items to review and, in any case, it's not at all clear how many of you out there actually read them. Thus I ask: do you think I should retain the feature? If so, do you have any suggestions for products that I should review?
Secondly, in addition to my usual Ars Magica and GURPS games, I've recently been talked into GMing occasional Pathfinder adventures for my younger cousins and have even taken a look at the the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons books before deciding they're not for me. In any case, the whole thing has got me thinking a lot about the idea of a babyfur themed RPG. I don't really think such a thing would be commercially successful or even see much play even at cons, but I do think it presents an interesting challenge. Despite my own preference for high-crunch simulationist games, I don't think that would be the right approach for a babyfur RPG. If anything, I think something closer to Golden Sky Stories would be the way to go. What do you think?
Finally, for those of you who don't know, there's currently a project to select a national bird for Canada in 2017 (http://www.canadiangeographic.ca/nationalbird/). In addition to my desire to help promote the project, however, I'm also not sure who to cast my vote for. I was, I'll admit, one of those who thought that the Common Loon was our national bird and while a fine animal in its own right, it's also Ontario's provincial bird which seems a bit unfair. The problem is that all my other favourites (Snowy Owl, Chickadee, and Puffin) are provincial birds too. Therefore, loyal journal readers, I ask you: which of the 40 submissions do you think is most worthy?
Well, I guess that's enough for one journal, thanks for reading! *huggles*

Also, I like the candy series - maybe you could diversify into other yummy snacks?
Hmm it's also a good idea about potentially expanding into non-candy snacks. I wonder where I ought to start...
It'd be cool to see a babyfur rpg as well. Working out it's entirely unique incontinence mechanics may be difficult however, though I feel such a thing would be essential for the crowd that would want to play it. The setting too could take work. Do you go with a DnD-esque type setting? A babyfur only world like my own creation from my defunct comic? Maybe a setting like rugrats were the characters' own overactive imagination and ignorance of the world create the adventures for them? I wouldn't mind helping you work on a game like this Kaffre. If you were seriously interested.
As for Babyfur: The RPG, I did briefly consider Maeria as a campaign world, but eventually rejected the idea due to a lack of material to work with (IIRC, half the comic wound up being a dream sequence and thus possibly non-canon). My first instinct is to have the babyfurs actually be going on adventures since it seems like it would be easier to hack that into a psychodrama than to attempt the reverse.
For what it's worth, I am very interested in trying my paw at designing such a game, I'm just a bit indecisive about what features I want to include. Perhaps we can discuss it further...
Lots of acquaintances that have tried designing their own Pen & Paper RPGs seem to make use of the D20 Open Source resources. Personally, I feel constrained by the D20 system, but it is a system in which gamers are quite familiar with.
As noted in my OP, I generally prefer 2nd generation simulationist games like GURPS or Ars Magica, but feel they might not a good fit for this particular project. That said, however, I think the decision of what mechanics we use will have to be a functionalist one in which the mechanics are closely tailored so as to emulate the feel of the genre. Unfortunately, our chosen genre is so niche that I feel we may have to define these itself. I am not, however, opposed to using a well known system, d20, for example as a base, I just don't think it would be a good fit unless heavily customized..
Also, just out of curiosity (and to get a feel for your own preferences), what TTRPGs do you enjoy?
Anyway, the main concern I have is that all those you mention are class/level systems and while I'm not necessarily opposed to such an approach, I'm not really sure how appropriate many of the standard RPG classes will be which could complicate things.
Also, I've given some thought as to our, euphemistically named, "diaper mechanic". My thought is that it could be treated like eating or sleeping and mostly handled off-screen (unless, of course, the players wish otherwise), but impose some penalty (Condition in PF parlance) if the character can't get changed within a certain timeframe. Also, certain spells and/or monster effects could cause the character to use their diapers as well. Thoughts?
I'm definitely fine with the initial framework for the diaper mechanic. I like the idea of clean diapers being a "resource" you can use to enable an ability. Attaching a consequence to walking around in used diapers will add to the tension of the game and might help players get into character by wanting a change due to the actual damage it will cause to their stats. I could see monsters causing babyfur characters to use their diapers out of fear or sorcery. Can't really complain about any of your ideas presented here.
Anyway, while I hadn't really intended it, the system I started tinkering with actually does resemble D&D 4e quite a bit in that I think I want the base mechanic to involve contested rolls between different attributes Brawn vs. Body for a melee attack for instance. I initially thought of it as an extension of BRP's Resistance Table, but IIRC D&D4 had a similar feel.
In any case, while I have quite enjoyed our conversation thus far, I think I should probably create a non-journal venue for us to continue the discussion as this journal is starting to become a little cluttered already...
My solution was to create a dedicated place to comment (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15606707/). In retrospect, however, that will probably become just as cluttered in relatively short order... *embarrassed*
