From what I've heard, it has some negative connotations that I haven't heard of. By definition, though, it doesn't even seem to be a bad thing--it's a form of belief that the best course of action in one's lifetime is to minimize pain and maximize pleasure for both theirself and others. Hell, I identify more with that belief than with any other I've ever heard of. Pleasure is a fleeting thing while pain can be found at any time. I'd say that the pursuit in and of itself is a noble ideal.
