SOS, Computer Wizards take my hand

I'll get right to it. I am in need of a new computer again. My current one has some sorta cancer no one can figure out or fix(story bellow). My limit this time around is 1,000. I really need help finding a laptop or desktop that will runn adobe programs, and autodesk programs like maya and motion builder. Im just afraid of going to my local tech store (Frys) and buying the wrong machine.
I kinda need like a check list of yes, and no's
For the curious I'll explain here why Im abandoning
my pc. Don't really gotta read this part.
Okay so this sucks. My pc randomly crashes. screen goes black, sound cuts. but the pc itself still remains on the fans still blowing and lights remaining on. Only way to get it to turn back on is to unplug and plug it back in. Ive had this problem for many months and taken it to a repair shop twice. Scanned the damn thing and each time no viruses no major malfunctions, all components work as they should. but each time they say(guess) its the motherboard so we've switched the mother board out two times now and the same story. Ive spent a dumb amount of my savings into trying to fix this pc with NO results so Im ready to move on which sucks because this is a great rig. works fine and smoothly with no lag like nothings wrong but it just crashes on its own.
And I need a working computer for my school work. Its already happened where I sink hours into something and it slips my mind to save and poof it shuts off and lost all that work. Im in a state of mind where Im sorta panicked knowing my pc could crash at any possible second with no warning. ( I wont be throwing it away, I just need something that works for school. I may attempt to fix this one in the future but for now I need something that works)

If it's a Desktop, it pretty much will require hunting down for parts or looking for an already built one! (Else craiglist can be nice for MEGA deals, watchout for scams, though)
If it's a lapotp, there's a lot of factors as they're not changeable. Size, weight, Ports required, etc etc. Then comes the question of performances needed. But if you need to run those working programs, a good processor can be nice, while a graphic card helps into rendering, etc etc.
hmm, never thought about looking into Craigslist
But for craiglist, it can be amazing at times. You can find some machines at nice prices. The only problem can be conditions and, even worst, sellers who tends to cause a lot of crap.
I wont really be using it for gaming. I honestly need it to surf the web and run adobe programs, and autodesk programs like maya and motion builder smoothly.
