But if you prefer to Japanese people only, the fact I know is most of people I see really worse in English. Someone may sensitive real much and may ignore you real quick as soon as you start English conversation.

Sure. I talked with Taiwanese and Malaysian, but they can speak English well.

I'm a native English speaker, and honestly compared to other languages its way harder in retrospect.
I still use broken grammar, and it definitely isnt set up as easily as other languages with the endings you would see on verbs for spanish or german.

actually not japanese only, if you browse FA you'll find many chinese and korean cant speak english well too... i guess it because the letter used? i dont know either...

but as bulbabenz said there are some of them will ignore you within seconds and some trying to communicate with you

I have a few German friends who say the same thing. One types/writes English a bit better than the other, but I've never actually heard either of them SPEAK before so I can't say anything about that.

I don't think it's anything bad. English is a rough language that takes inspiration from many other languages, and it's hard enough for us to learn. I think the hardest part is the grammar and pronunciation - Japanese is definitely easier in that regard!

i also think pronunciation of Japanese, but grammar is very very difficult.

My friend from Germany said she often finds it confusing how EVERY OBJECT has to have a gender - no exceptions, and sometimes it doesn't make any sense (Wine being female or something, example). Confusing!

You shouldn't let it bother you. Most Westerners who SHOULD know English can barely grasp the language sometimes. Too often I see sentences like "Your a really great artist!" Or "Their gonna loose their account."

So yeah, maybe some Japanese artists could try to speak English, but I think it's fine if they don't feel confident.

I just think they need not say things like this because they need not be humble.

Is it because they are on a non-Japanese site they should try to use English you feel? Like I figured if I made a pixiv account, I would try at least a little to write in Japanese considering the user base. For that reason I would agree with you.

I don't really find it an issue that some Japanese people can't speak English too well, even Americans and Europeans would tell you that English is pretty much a language not set in stone due to most of the words and their meanings, the involvement of certain cultures between the two countries, so I understand why it is a bit hard, even if they only know so much of it, being greatly fluent or having extremely limited ability to understand the language itself.

I'm actually interested in Japanese people as well as other cultures, because even despite the language barrier, your still willing to share some of your practices and bits of your culture with those from the other side of the world, I really admire that sort of attitude. All in all, I see nothing bad about them, very nice and well mannered.

I've never had a chance to really be friends with one! I'm slowly learning the language and I intend to visit Japan one day - maybe even live there! From what I've seen from semi-reliable sources, they have much different customs than over here and seem to treat certain things a lot differently. Like gender equality, for one thing. If someone needs help with English, I'd gladly help them in any way I can.

Any person whose language does not use the letters of the alphabet will have trouble learning English. It is one of the hardest languages to learn for foreign individuals.

Having quite a few very close friends whose native language is not English, I stopped judging by how they speak long ago. The way a person acts and their personality is much more important in my opinion. If someone is having a really tough time with English, I at least try to be courteous and use those "translation services" to get a feeling on what they are saying.

Well, considering I'm a Japanese international exchange student XD I speak english very well, enough to get by in university anyways. I'm also sort of scottish (dad's brother) so I've got quite the mix.

I don't know. I don't really mind people using translation software. I use that stuff a lot myself. I like some Japanese transforming robot toys and stuff, so I always wondered what was written on the box as a young kid. Now I still come across pictures and stuff that have Japanese text and shows that are not translated into English.
I think it's rough seeing another language and wanting to know what is being said, but not being able to memorize and learn the language without difficulty.

I've talked to a few people who use google translate and don't speak english, I don't judge people based on their ability to speak english fluently, and I think it's dumb if people hate those who aren't native english speakers.
