At rare times, I've even seen computer mice at dollar stores. (Dollar Tree)
Granted, it wasn't anything optical, just trackball.
Ooh! Oooh! Hey, better yet... I know...
Buy an identical model of mouse from some store... hold on to your receipt and packaging from the identical model replacement mouse... then take the broken one and put it in the packaging the new one came in, and take it back to the store you bought it from and be all like...
"Umm, yeah... I'd like to return this, it's a defective mouse I just bought from you guys yesterday".
(Yup... I'm a shady sort... I admit it). *Whimpers and my rabbit ears droop*
I dunno. *Shrugs* Sometimes we gotta do what we must to make it by in life, y'know?
1 - I myself may be spending some money come tomorrow, when I go on a little excursion up the a little further up the east coast here to New York City come tomorrow.
2 - While I still don't know how good I am at art, I likes working at it, trying to improve my skills. Plus, I just like the whole DIY (Do It Yourself) type mindset for a lot of things.
Hey there, I dunno how much help I can be but the Freecycle service may be able to help you, www.freecycle.org to your local freecycle chapter on yahoo, when you join the group you can post a want ad for a mouse there, as well as offer stuff and whatnot I have had very good luck with them getting computer stuff as well as donating stuff to other people.
I hope this helps.

(Had one myself that gave away to a fur at Fur Fright 2008 last October
after I felt I simply couldn't get the hang of using a tablet.
It's was Genius brand F610 model... about $90 from off of Amazon.
Going with any tablet rather than Wacom will save you some green.
Also, if you get one used, that of course will help all the mores.
(Assuming you don't mind going with used tablet).
