About having a pet, the costs

For discussion:
This is not about anyone. This is about the thought process that goes into owning a pet.
I have a cat. I like dogs and cats but I'll not get a dog because dogs cost a lot. Like a friend once said, dogs are like children. There's always something wrong or needing attention and potential vet bills can be high. Even when you are charged by the pound for even routine immunizations, a vet bill can run a few hundred for routine visits for a large dog.
Exotic pets that have a history of health problems such as ferrets, birds, reptiles, etc can be pricey.
I'm seeing a trend in people begging for money because their pet had a huge vet bill. So the question is: Why on Earth would you adopt an animal you couldn't pay to care for?
I'm not saying to do or not do for supporting these please for assistance. I'm just shaking my head wondering why would people have pets they clearly cannot afford to have?
I should add I'm not a dog person because I don't feel I could afford the costs. I've seen healthy dogs become 5k bills in no time. I'd hate to have to choose.

I used to have a dog till May of 2014 (he passed away). We didnt' spend money of special dog food (it's not healthy anyway), since we fed him with a raw meat, the same one we eat and some other natural products, like vegetables. Vet also wan't an issue. He had been seen by vet just couple of times during his life. And all those times were an emergencies.
Because people are selfish, stupid and thoughtless, that's why. They want a pet like someone wants a toy or a games console: they see it as a treat for themselves, rather than the life of another living creature.
I know someone who adopted a cat whilst living solely on benefits/welfare. He doesn't even support himself, yet thought it acceptable to take on the responsibility of supporting an animal. Utter idiot.
I have a cat. I also have good-quality medical insurance for him that will pay for thousands of pounds worth of medical bills if the worst ever happens. People who have pets and then get surprised by large bills are guilty of poor planning, and absolutely don't deserve donations from you or anyone else. To be absolutely frank, they're not fit to be a pet owner.
However, in most cases I agree. One should not own a pet unless the have the time and financial means to do so.
I'd love to have a big dog, but I live alone in an apartment. It would be cruel to leave a dog alone all day when I'm at work. So I have to wait for retirement if I want to have a dog.
