If I haven't mentioned it before here, my current desktop is not doing too well these days. The CPU overheats like crazy to the point that running a YouTube video or stream will make the CPU run at 42+ degrees Celsius. Yeah...that's not good. Plus, the RAID setup I use for my secondary storage failed twice in the last few days making me wary of doing another RAID setup.
It's the first time that I'm going with an Intel that isn't in a Mac, so this will be interesting. Plus, I'm going to use liquid cooling to keep the CPU cool while not overclocking. I'm not for overclocking as it can fuck up your system if you don't have consistent cooling. I am going to stay with my current graphics card because it's pretty boss and I prefer NVIDIA. I also realize after the fact that I forgot to get more than 8 GB of RAM, which is almost a cardinal sin in gaming. I'm going to need at least 8 GB more or I might go crazy and just buy 16 GB more, all depends on what's locally available.
Then, I'm going to need to look at places where I can recycle my old parts. Seriously, my old case and motherboard are history. Hell, I accidentally stripped a screw and can't remove one of the risers from the motherboard so even if I wanted to reuse it, I can't. I'm also debating if I should reuse my old generation one Blu-ray burner. I own Blu-rays, but I have a Blu-ray player hooked up to my TV, so I don't use the one on my computer anymore. Plus, if I go with a fresh install of Windows, all of my programs are gone and I have to reinstall everything. All the games, all the utilities, everything.
So, here's a question for you: should I attempt to migrate my current hard drive to my new rig, or just go fresh?

If you're going with a new motherboard you will have to do a fresh install or you'll get lots of registry errors. If you have access to an external hard drive use the windows migration tool to transfer all your settings to the new rig.

I actually have a USB setup where I can just slap SATA drives in as if they were external drives. But, I'll probably just do the fresh install anyways and use the USB setup to transfer all my major data. Lots of videos and lots of PDFs.

It also means I'll have to use my Blu-ray drive after all. Shit...

Why's that? For the install DVD? You really don't need to, as long as you have an 8GB USB drive you can use a tool Microsoft makes to create a bootable flashdrive.

True, but I wasn't really thinking that far ahead or outside of the box. :P

Hehe, well, there you go then. How far ahead are you? Are you even to the picking parts stage?

Parts are picked and most are in the process of being shipped. I got the new case which is a beast. It weighs over 18 lbs and is ruggedized for the military, so it'll last. Everything but the processor will be arriving soon (like within a couple hours) and the processor should be here in a couple days. Like I mentioned above, I didn't order enough RAM, so I need to go on a shopping trip to Best Buy or the local computer shop to browse their wares.

Probably a very good call.
