Videogames Meme
I'm not usually one for making journal entries (especially ones containing fluff like Memes), or... well... writing in general for that matter... But this one (originally found in BRAFORD0005's Journal) seemed like a lot of fun... so what the hell.
1) What was your FIRST video game console?
The first one our family actually owned was an Atari 2600.
The first video game I played within the comfort of my home however was "Stunt Cycle", on a large computer (of some sort) that my father brought home from work for a day or two (from what I remember it was bigger than a mini fridge, with caster wheels, and fake wood paneling).
I believe that it had three games stored on it but "Stunt Cycle" is the only one I remember.
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
Well, there was "Combat" of course (it came with the system).
My aunt, who bought the Atari as a Christmas gift for my sisters and I, gave us each a game cartridge. My first game was "Superman", and my sisters received "Haunted House", and "Video Pinball".
Aside from those, favorites included "Frogger", "Pac-Man", "Berserk", "Yar's Revenge", "Asteroids", "Defender", "Air Raiders", "Night Driver", "Warlords" (still a highly enjoyable multiplayer game to this day IMO), and "Adventure" to name a few.
I even played and beat the dreaded ET, though I can't recall if it was on the highest difficulty setting.
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
Seven, if you include an SNES that needs to be restored and one of those Atari joysticks with a few games built into it, and if you don't count my PCs.
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
No, not really.
Chun Li (love those thunder thighs) and Vega (no real reason).
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with
"creating characters that look so good you forget to focus on the game."
Not really, but I don't dislike them either. "Megaman" is a long time fave, and I LOVE "Marvel vs Capcom".
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
My friends are generally not that inconsiderate... For the sake of argument though, there's no way in hell that I'd let them touch my game controllers!!
Of course, we're talking me (ie. someone who's prone to stripping, cleaning, and re-oiling his controllers from time to time)...
To drive the point home, I've been using the same PC mouse for about a decade now (still works great because I keep it cleaned out). Everyone else I know throws theirs out the second it gets a little crud in the rollers.
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG? I will allow a second and third fave if you insist.
I'm not really an RPG person, so nothing really stands out in my mind... I enjoy "Earthbound", "Chrono Trigger", "Crystalis", "The Secret of Evermore"... and I'm in the middle of "Thousand Arms" right now, which is fun although formulaic (I'm getting tired of having to constantly praise and abuse my female entourage in order to unlock spells).
Hmmmm... Are the "Legend of Zelda" games closer to Action RPGs or Platformers? If they count as RPGs, then those would have to be my favorite.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
In the beginning I was strictly 2D. Early 3D games were novel, but they had an extremely claustrophobic feel to them (which was very distracting).
These days (with higher quality texture mapping, higher poly-counts, larger environments, and better effects to hide the boundaries of the game world) it doesn't matter anymore.
As long as it's fun, or draws you in, that's all that matters.
9) Are you an SNK fan?
Again, I neither love or hate them. I enjoy the "Metal Slug" games, and "Waku Waku 7", and again "Crystalis" is an old favorite of mine.
10) Are you good at DDR?
No, but I've only played once or twice.
My brother on the other hand...
11) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
I've unloaded many a virtual round into that giggling punk's rear.
12) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
No, just sleep. ...Lots and lots of sleep...
13) Do you listen to video game music?
Oh yes. Ever since the days when you had to hold a tape recorder up to the TV speaker to capture your favorite tunes.
14) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
No, unless you count Leonardo from TMNT, but to do that you'd have to do some serious backward thinking.
I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE a "Blaster Master" enviro-suit though.
15) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old Asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
I'm sure it's happened, but no particular event comes to mind.
I have a younger brother who, like myself, grew up on video games... so I'm used to getting schooled by someone younger than me.
I had a similar experience at a chess tournament though.
I'm a mediocre player, and was only on the chess team because my best friend was (that, and the team would have been disbanded for not having enough players if I hadn't joined).
I had just had my lunch handed to me by some pompous little grade schooler, when I passed by the commissary and overheard him talking to a friend. They were going over our game and his friend (also a pompous little grade schooler) kept referring to me as a moron.
I did an about-face and challenged the little twerp to a game. He gladly accepted, and I proceeded to wipe the floor with him. Before I could deliver the finishing blow he threw up his arms in frustration and forfeited.
A look of astonishment (and pity for his friend) washed across the face of the first kid, and neither were able to make eye contact with me for the rest of the tournament.
It was a good day!
But, um, yeah... back to video games...
16) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
"Blaster Master" with more levels, updated music, and richer environments!!!! The sequels were kind of mediocre.
"The Legend of Zelda", again with richer environments (preferably 3D top 3/4 view) and updated music.
And, I don't know... "Warlords" has apparently been done already... So has "SpyHunter"...
Maybe "Full Throttle" with a much longer story?
17) Mario or Sonic?
They both have their charm, but I find Mario's universe to be a lot more interesting.
18) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
No. The only exception is "Ghostbusters". ...but Ghostbusters is "god-tier".
19) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
Sports, ugh. Let's take something that's only sometimes fun (but only when you're actually playing) and give it a menu system...
20) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
"Blaster Master" (NES)!! Best video game in all of existence EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...IMO
21) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
I recall dropping a very large F-bomb while playing "F-Zero GX", followed by a silent pause, and a quiet "Are you ok?" from my mother downstairs (I very rarely swear around family members).
...Does that count?
22) Do you own any VG apparel?
I have some merchandise (mainly figurines), but no apparel.
23) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
Although I fully understand the inherent problems with basing a movie on a video game franchise... it really was just awful.
24) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
Never saw it. I avoided it like the plague.
25) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
Hmmm. I'm not really up to speed on the franchise... *Googles*...
Um, Lien Neville...? She has really great... ... color sense! Yup, black and yellow, the color combo of champions!!... *cough*
26) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
Occasionally.
27) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
No, but I stopped lending games to casual accountancies back in grade school.
28) Do you own any imported games?
Nope.
29) Are you ready for this meme to be over, or could you keep going?
Although it's taken a while to fill out, it could use more (or slightly different) questions. Don't you want to know...
...what my favorite producer/developer actually is? Answer = Sunsoft (with the help of Tokai Engineering)
...about how I view game cartridges as being superior to CDs?
...about how COMPLETELY AWESOME I think it is that long time rivals Nintendo and Sega now work together?
...about how I point and laugh at PS fans who grip and moan about Nintendo (HAW HAW all of the R&D that went into the precursor of your precious PS1 was paid for BY NINTENDO)?
...about how "yes, I did grow up eating Nintendo cereal", and how "I do miss Pac-Man / Ghost Monster ice-cream bars" (mmmmmmmm gumball eyes....)?
...if I had video game posters on my bedroom walls when I was a kid? Answer = Yes, several (some of which I made myself). There was Zelda, Blaster Master, SpyHunter, "Starfox", and "The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants" (off the top of my head).
Ok, I'll stop now. I think I've sufficiently proven that I'm a huge geek...
30) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where? This can be simple or elaborate.
For pretend... maybe the MA-01 crest from Blaster Master on my shoulder, or the three Triforces... or a "Bob-omb".
31) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
No, I don't believe so... I've played games that I've gotten emotional over... but I don't think I've ever actually cried.
So there you have it. A little information about yours truly, delivered in the most roundabout way possible.
Cherish it always!
