Taking stock of the situation, catching people up.
10 years ago
The last day has felt like an entire week. I barely got any sleep. And being so level headed in the beginning of it all is starting to catch up to me I think. I’m going to be reaching out to the councelors a the red cross in a few days.
First of all I want to thank everyone that has donated so far. It’s best to email me at sheelashrapnel[at]gmail.com for non-cash donations so I can give out the information required, I had a few people offer computers and that’s something that’s really amazing.
Jet’s step-father gave us 1000 dollars to get on our feet and says that he’ll furnish our apartment once we find one, and my sister posted on facebook about it and there are people apartment hunting for us and willing to donate clothing and appliances. The red cross gave us a disaster card with I think 300 dollars on it that takes away all tax on items so we got some more clothes (just some tshirts and extra sweatpants, underwear, deodorant, a sling for my arm so I don’t tug on my stitches, etc). With the 1000 dollars, we went out and got me a computer that I’ll be able to work on. It only uses intel HD graphics but the monitor’s colors are true and the screen is decently large even if it is a touch screen. It was 700 dollars, and with the rest I got Jet a Samsung galaxy 4 tablet so he can be in contact with people. That was 200. Plus tax it was about 980. I assume that I need to do some automatic updates for this laptop because at the moment the trackpad’s scrolling is inverted.
With all the help that you guys have thrown our way we should be able to get a downpayment on a new place once we find one in our price range. And I’ll be getting a tablet and some more clothing on Amazon since it has our card info in it still. I didn’t get one today because working isn’t currently a priority. I’m sort of fragile at the moment. I took pictures of my injuries but I’m too self conscious to show them outside of people that I know. It’s difficult to walk around too long because my legs are pretty badly and deeply bruised.
On Monday we’re going to be heading down to DSS to get things handled, get back any info we can like social security cards, birth certificates, EBT cards, then we need to get our debit cards back as well.
I don’t recall if I mentioned this previously but I’m afraid Zanzil passed in the fire. He was groaning when the apartment filled with smoke and wouldn’t come when I called, and the only way out was through the window. With them filling the place with water, I don’t really have any hope that he made it out alive. Which is what hits me the hardest. I loved him so, so much I can’t even put it to words. Jet did just as much. He was like our son, and it’s terrible thinking of his last moments like that. We put out word with pictures at the shelters that are handling the cases but given the circumstances… I don’t have high hopes.
Katelyn suggested I make a gofundme to get back the items that were lost in the fire. I have about 10,000 dollars worth of items in there and some that were completely priceless. I don’t really have many concerns about getting it all back, I will when I can, I’m just happy to be alive. I can’t put it to words too well. It’s like, in the past I was often depressed and wondering what the point of things were sometimes but when the house was full of smoke all I could think of was how much I loved Jet and how much I wanted to live. The possessions didn’t matter. I’m sad about the lost games and saves and music but I have all my art and that means more to me than anything else.
I’ll still tally up everything and get prices down, just so I have something to stride for. But right now all I really care about is getting a roof over our heads, clothes and food. Which is why I went for getting a laptop. At least then I can work. I’ll keep you all updated on the listing of items that were lost in the fire. And on the steps we’re taking to get our lives back. Feel free to email me and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can, or leave comments, whatever.
Your well wishes have meant the world to us, and so have the donations you’ve made. I’ll give out addresses for shipping any clothes, food, or general helpful products that people want to give. I’ve had a lot of trouble getting any sleep and just seeing the comments you all have made when I was browsing on my phone made me feel so much better. Just… I can never thank you enough.

If you accept Paypal donations from your Email still, I'd like to offer my aide in this. ;3;
It's good too that you see possessions as only that - yeah, it's sad to lose them, but you made it out of something that you could have just as easily not have. In time, you'll get things back. Maybe at least with music we can all help out - between the libraries of others, perhaps you can rebuild what you had. Feel free to PM me any day to see if there's anything I can share to help you start rebuilding.
A GoFundMe page wouldn't hurt either, especially if you can get the news people who covered the initial story to cover that effort as well. If there's anything else you need, just post it here - there's always a chance someone can help you. :) Good luck - keep us all updated, and get some much-needed rest.
Like others I'll continue to spread word around though, looks like people are more than happy to lend a hand
I still have a tablet (as in graphics tablet) or two I can offer if you're interested.
