*snickers* i wonder how it looks on the user-end when they don't have the encoding to handle other languages. does it show up as effed up characters, question marks or a bunch of unicode box gibberish?

Well, most of it actually shows up as letters with little weird symbols over or under them. Though some of it is just boxes.
Anything in Japanese shows up as a bunch of boxes too.

But of course my point is that even if I can see the symbols, I can't understand any of it, except the word Also, which I thought was funny. Which I think you got anyway. Hehe.

When I was 15 I used to write journal entries in polish/russian/german mixed to obfuscate them X)

usually if i'm airing grievances just to get it off my chest, i tend to make it pretty unintelligible for everyone else and leave it as more of a note to meself. then again, some readers have knowledge in all of those multiple languages. if only i could create another form of pidgin...

You could try writing Viet without the accents, though I'm not sure how well that would work, 'cause I know they're needed to convey the tones.

Polish is great for that. It has only a few accents (ąęółńćżźś), but, if you omit them and use (aeolnczzs) instead, it's still perfectly readable to a human who knows the language, but not to a machine translator or anyone learning it :)

In fact, often it obfuscates the language further, because there are some words that have different meaning without the accents, confusing the translators even further.

Someone fluent, though, is used to reading/writing this way, because back in the day, people had no way to write accents on their computers, only on typewriters which had very non-standard keys, as well as on cellphones. When you learn to read, you pay attention more to the beginning and end of the word, and its length and shape, rather than each individual letter, so people get an instinct of reading without accents, and for those words that are different with/without accents but spelled the same way, you just guess by context.

*grins* and i have written out viet without the accents before, though one could still infer the meaning by making educated guesses on how it would sound if spoken out. though, if it was written in ASCII viet, it'd almost be a complete jumble of strange marks and different characters to "build" a proper viet letter. sometimes i'd use a mixture of both just to be a bastard like that. X3

'course i just found out how to use the VN IME on my computer just shortly before making the entry, so it's almost like a quick test run on where all the keystrokes are and what goes before where. now, the next step is finding an IME that will support the old Chinese-based Vietnamese characters :3

We have it easy, I guess. Normal US keyboard, but right ALT + letter makes the accent.

I'm looking for a Russian phonetic IME, where I can use latin translit to type in cyrillic. It would take me ages to learn where all the keys are otherwise.

indeed it is! i've always spoken it at home, but never really written in Viet on a regular basis. i figure it'd be a good skill to try and keep sharp, considering the rather large Vietnamese population here in SoCal.
