PORN ARTISTS... pls read!!
HEY GUYS! So. Adult artwork. I love depicting suggestive themes (with the female form in particular), but I've always been very hesitant to venture into the XXX realm.... I have a few questions that I figured, who better to ask than the artists themselves??
So for those of you who draw R rated artwork, does anyone in your family circle know what you do? Any of your friends or your significant other? What do they think about it?
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork?
ALSO... for just fulltime artists in general, what the hell do you do for taxes? LOL. Do you have to pay a ton for taxes...? And do you include your entire income when you file the taxes or do you kind of lie a bit?
THANKS IN ADVANCED... don't need to answer ALL of these questions if you don't feel like it but I really appreciate how you guys handle this stuff. Most people in my life already know I'm a fulltime artist, but I'm very hesitant to show them my work because of the furry content... and I'd be significantly more nervous if the majority of my work was porn. ANY WORDS OF WISDOM, FELLOWS? <3

My parents generally dislike furry stuff as a whole, my friends are kind of tolerant or indifferent.
The people in my family do know I make adult artwork at times as do my friends. Do I show them often? No, but they know of it and have seen some. My boyfriend knows as well and is part of this community.
they don't seem to have any problem with it. The only ones that do are my uncles and it happens to be because they are very ignornant about things.
Otherwise I found for whatever reason my mother and grandmother happen to be proud of the work I do.
As far as future kids I dont have concerns with them seeing it eventually. That could do with how I feel about sex though. I feel its a natural thing and its only weird or a problem if you make it one. so I generally take a very positive and normal attitude towards it =)
I hope that helps in any way =)
My parents are not aware of what I do. I don't have friends but those online cause I hate to socialize due people in my town seem to lack that big of intelligence to keep up with my insanity. My parents are against the whole art life. They want me to do something else with my life, but I have no freaking money and this is the best option to make money with my life at the moment.
Now, as for those questions. Change names, when you have kids. Like throwing an identity. Currently I'm going through less R commissions cause I wish to venture into the concept artist world. And I can't throw in R Furry artwork, that's gonna get me fired way before I get hired. But you can either have separated accounts with no connection at all, not show your children what you draw in one and another and be safe.
My friends never cared much for art so I never showed them my work anyways but I guess I would say just try to gauge how open minded they are. I only tend to tell my dad about adult art because I know it kind of bugs him but he still supports it.
I do worry that other artists I've built up connections with will look at me weird since I also work in concept art but for the most part, artists seem to know about how big and lucrative adult art can be. I mean I just created a Hentai-Foundry account in December and my work has significantly more views than my Deviant Art account submissions. That says something.
My family and friends both know that I venture into the more adult themed images sometimes, though I don't do them often, I have done them. My husband is perfectly fine about it, and even has helped me with themes from time to time. My sister has also helped me come up with ideas. My friends and other family, although proud that I have made somewhat of a business with my art, haven't really given me any indication that they are for or against the art form. It does bother them seeing it, so this is the only site that I post adult pieces on. That way they don't have to see something that may offend them.
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?
I do not want my son seeing this kind of art at his age (he's only 5), so I usually work on a more safe piece while he is home and when he's at school, I work on other pieces. I also usually have the SFW button on when he's looking at art with me on here too. So precautions are taken so he doesn't see anything at this time. When he is much older, I don't think I will mind too much, but that all depends on his age. I wouldn't allow porn being seen by him until he is of legal age.
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork?
My husband is a work-a-holic so most of the money for bills comes from him, while I pay more for the things that I can through paypal online. This usually includes anything we need around the house, clothing, school stuff for my son, etc. I can get things that are just random and most of the time I do make enough to do all that I want to. It's comfortable, but we are far from the rich lifestyle.
As far as taxes go, I do this as a "side job" though I am actually unemployed at the moment. Most artists that I see around here are in the same boat or have a job offline. You probably won't make the money that more popular or educated artists do, so I wouldn't worry too much with taxes unless you want to pay in at the end of the year. It would be under filed under Self-employed, you would have to keep ALL receipts from any expenses for your employment as an artist. Most of the time it is only a small percentage of these expenses that are taken off your taxes at the end of the year as well, so you need to keep that in mind. You will be paying in on taxes each year.
I don't plan on having kids for a few more years, but I will be happy to tell my grandkids "when i was ur age i drew dicks on animal people for 100$".
I don't do art as a fulltime thing, but I make I guess 350$ roughly per month? but I don't take on alot of commissions and just do stuff when I need to.
" you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?"
No, I knew my mom Rp'd adult works, and made adult writings from middle school. She was just open and honest in her explanations when I stumbled upon it and explained to me it was just something she did for extra income sometimes. As a kid, I didn't care lol. Why would I? I just went about my business and when she was working my brother and I never bothered her anyways. So it's not a big deal. Being honest and open when you feel your youth are "able" to understand the information is pretty important with anything. Even this stuff. They'll find worse things on the internet probably sooner than you'd like to believe/admit and at least if you are open with them and honest, they won't go about trying to sneak around or getting into trouble. As long as you stress there is a time and place for such information.

Ish? I do "well enough" to take care of small issues and the occasional bill or two, but it's more of a, "I survive" kind of thing! Then again, I'm still relatively unknown!
As for taxes, I can't honestly answer as I am genuinely unsure! I'm still trying to get some help from my pops (he helps me with my taxes) on what/how it works with this type of situation.
but to add: multiple accounts are great, but pretty unnecessary. I broke down and made an alt account for personal works and commissioned images because my commissioners aren't interested. SO new account. However I'm on it maybe once every week or two weeks. You might start off with two accounts, but predominantly end up with one over time. So If I were you, I'd just use scraps for stuff you don't want in your main gallery! It's easier to manage by far!
Having an alternate alias: you already have one. Just be cautious, I wouldn't hide things from people you care about (kids included), because it makes those you hide it from feel "untrustworthy" etc. etc. Again, honesty is highly valued, but it's case by case and a need to know basis. Even with multiple accounts, your kids will be far more savvy with electronics and than you and I could hope too be They'd find out for sure, and again, you don't want them to have to snoop! I WOULD highly recommend though, you keep your true names etc off your profiles here. Even if you don't create adult works. You really just don't want your information about anything "personal" like this floating around your work place. You never know with some people.
I wish you all the best and do hope to see more from you no matter what you decide!
I do draw adult work, and theres only a select few friends that know i do, mostly the ones in the fandom themselves and a couple others. If i had kids, no, i wouldnt want them to see it until they're at an age that they can fully understand that kind of stuff.
But my state also doesnt have income tax, i would have to pay federal, and I think the federal limit is...$2k a year is what I read somewhere?
But at least your mom can tell you :D
My husband and closest friends are fully supportive of what I do but my family and community doesn't know.
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work? I work during the nights. When I lived with family I would just work after they had gone to bed.
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork? I do but not till after years of building up an audience. My first few times trying to do so resulted in me failing and putting myself in a terrible spot financially. Now I am much more known, I have a good work schedule, and I do not take more than I can handle.
My boyfriend thinks it's great, haha! He enjoys it as well as the money it brings in for us.
Most of my work is clean, but admitably, adult work brings in the money!
Also most of my friends know I draw it too and are either amused or indifferent (or have considered doing it themselves in the case of my art student friends).
a lot of people who I'm not close with, like a bunch of people on my university course, also know I do it. No one really has anything bad to say about it and if they do, I tend to tell them i just do it for the money (which seems to calm them down if they're judgey about it, even tho it's a lie.)
I don't have kids or plan to, so that's not really a problem.
As for taxes, stuff is different over here in the UK (assuming you're not in the uk), but I'd have to register as self-employed, at the moment that would be a bad idea for me since I don't make enough to live on, and it would affect the amount of money i get from student finance which is my main living money right now. But as it's not a 'regular' amount of money coming in, I don't really have to declare it or anything. Also as a full time student I don't have to pay taxes.
My Grandparents do, my mom and younger do. I think if my gram found out I would get an eye brow raise and a "You shouldn't do that" and that's it, she's pretty relaxed. My gramp's would be very upset, he wouldn't say anything but boy would I get the guilt trip XD My mom and brother are pretty cool with it, I share my work with them comfortably and receive these delightful yet awkward comments from my dear mother "I'd do 'im!"
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?
No, if they were younger I'd go out of my way to make sure they didn't see it. But if they stumble on it I'd just be as honest as I could and make it appropriate for their age. Kids are nosy, and you shouldn't be worried about having personal sex things in the house, you and your sweetie need fun too ;3
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork?
Sadly not yet. I hope to someday.
As far as kids, once again it comes down to your comfort level. Can you have an open dialogue with your child, explain to them what sex is?
My family knows what I do, so does my S/O, of course she does it as well. I am an adult and this is a job. I am hurting no one, and even then, I have the right to turn down anything that bothers me subject wise. But it is no real big deal.
For tax purposes, I say speak to a tax lawyer. I think the consultation is usually free. Will help you stay out of trouble later.
Hope this helps.
I'd suggest making a separate accounts for NSFW art and SFW art if you're worried. But I find most people just go "Oh sweet that's cool" then move on with their life.
I don't ever plan on having children. It's just not my mate nor I's calling in life. If we do ever have children I won't hide it from them either.
When I have good months of a decent amount of commissions I'm pretty well off but I wouldn't put my living on it by itself. I look at it more of a side job to make up what is still missing or to have a little extra to throw around. Unless you get to Jay Naylor level where you get like 700 per YCH auction haha. But that' not to say you can't make that kinda money x3
My friends know I draw adult work. My best friend is aware it's even specifically furry porn and finds it amusing. We run in burlesque circles though so there's a lot of ladies doing more out-there things than even I am, haha.
My S/O knows and likes it. He's had me draw some stuff for him, in fact. :D
If I have kids I am not particularly worried about them finding it. I'd be worried about them finding it too young but I don't see any need to be ashamed of what I do. /shrug
I'm not planning on having any kids, but I do live in a house with a minor currently (he's a teenager but still a minor) and I am a bit worried about him discovering my adult work, but I do make sure to keep it rather well hidden from him. He's super prudish anyways so it's not like he'll be looking for it XD
Currently no, I don't gather enough interest to make a stable living off my work. I'm on a benefit currently. At the moment, commissions are good for a little cash on the side to go towards buying nice stuff for myself and others.
First of all, no. None of my family knows what I draw. Frankly, even though I'm 23 I'd still feel hella awkward if my mum or dad saw my adult artwork.
Almost all of my friends know that I draw smutty things. The reactions range anywhere from "Hell yeah, rock on!" to "Okay, cool, I guess" or "/shrug/". Nobody, however, gives me any real flack for my work, and I imagine that even my own mum or dad wouldn't if they discovered it (My grandparents are another story, as they are very religious. I can't say what their reactions would be but it probably wouldn't be very happy).
I don't personally plan on ever having kids, but if I did, it wouldn't particularly worry me as far as my adult art is concerned. At worst, all I'd have to worry about would just be locking my stuff away while not in use so that it couldn't be "got at", so I wouldn't panic even if I were to have kids.
Unfortunately, I do not make a comfortable living on my artwork... but that's just generally because of lack in skill on my part. Lately I am trying to remedy that issue!
My personal advice would be just to not really worry about showing your inner circle your work. On the one hand, it might be better to keep adult stuff to a need-to-know basis, but it shouldn't cause an uproar if that work were to be discovered. Furry art in general doesn't garner any negative reactions unless the person reacting is a 4chan troll in real life as much as online, so don't sweat it! Be mindful if some of your family is religious, but other than that, nobody is really bothered. We're -all- sexual beings (except maybe the Asexuals, who usually don't really care), so nobody worth your time would judge you for drawing explicit content.
If you're particularly worried about the potential of family or friends discovering adult work you've drawn, and it really eats away at you (whether out of nagging fear of being judged or something else entirely)... my recommendation would be to create an alternate FA account specifically for adult work. It's a bit troublesome, but it would probably give you some peace of mind, which would be worth the effort! It would also make it far easier for you to "balance" between adult and general artwork by seeing if you're weighing on one direction or the other, and will make it easier to organize portfolios based on who or where you want to show your artwork.
I hope this all helps, Kaity! And remember that no matter what path you choose, your loyal fans will follow! /waves Kaity flag/
my parents dont know bc they already think im werid enough ahah
most of my friends know!! they either dont care or they draw stuff too, some think its werid but dont treat me any different, but then again most of my friends are artists or furries too so...
i feel kids wont know so long as perhaps if they get older you have a separate computer for them to use, and the one you use for art in your room only?
I use a cash-based accounting system for taxes. Subtract expenses from profits, pay self-employment tax on everything past the threshold the government says I can keep tax-free (which is about $400). Keep all your relevant receipts, and good records of your sales, and if you have any concerns or questions, it's best to consult with a tax professional.
No, I do not lie about my income.
Yes, I pay taxes on all of it that I am required to pay tax on.
This is my business, and on the off chance I get audited, I would much rather have my ducks in a row than get slapped with heavy fines and penalties for trying to cheat.
I make a decent living, and I don't think I'd be able to do it full time without doing the adult rated material. Or I don't think I'd be where I am today without offering it.
As far as taxes go, my husband is an accountant so he handles the whole thing for me; what I can write off, what I cant. But since I am self employed I always pay taxes and it's usually not a small amount.
For my family, my wife has occasionally seen some of my R-rated stuff (i.e. nude pinups), but my XXX-rated stuff I keep firmly to myself. As for the rest of my family, I haven't told them - if they do know about what I do they haven't said anything. Ditto for non-furry friends and colleagues - I keep my fandom and non-fandom lives pretty separate.
If you have kids/plan on having children, are you worried about them discovering your adult work?
No kids, no plans for having any. And my dogs have no interest one way or the other
Do you make a comfortable living with just artwork?
No, for me it's just a hobby, with maybe the odd commission for a bit of extra cash. But my annual commission total earnings (if any) fall waaaaay below the taxable threshold.
i dont plan on having children
i make about 200 a month but im doing it as a second job the big thing i can help you out on is the tax part because my dad is a business owner and he has given me some tips on legally doing your taxes as an artist or any kind of contracted person. so basically you are considered a self employed idividula and that means anything you do that goes along with your art is a partial write off meaning gas to go get pens pencils any art supply computers tablets even the food you eat when you go out if you talk about your art at all. My dad had a tax attorney for a long time so he knows some things if you have any question go ahead and note me id be glad to answer any questions.
You CAN make a comfy wage on art but its a lot of hard work and proper budgeting for me personally.
As for who likes it friends/family-wise, a lot of people I know do it/have found out about it. Even some of the most innocent-seeming people I know figured it out and so far many of them love it. Although most of these people in my circles are girls who like this stuff while most of the guys are usually indifferent about it and tolerate it.
Regardless of what you do there will be people who don't like it, and people who do like it. As I said above, if you enjoy it, do it. You'd probably be pleasantly surprised how many of your peers would enjoy you doing adult-oriented work. People don't generally talk about that stuff openly but chances are they'll be into it.
But honestly I am really upfront about what I do and I have no shame over it because if it makes money.
If I can rp it. Then- it's honestly really my business? So don't mind what others think. Do you!
