Blood Magic
In the many years of history in this alternate world I've been creating there has been numerous techniques of magic developed. Think of it like crossing martial arts styles with the additional variations of energy sources (oil, electric, nuclear, etc.)
The closest art to the original forms of magic is Blood Magic which uses life force as fuel just as the oldest magics did/do, albeit in a different form.
There are a number of benefits to blood magic. Possibly most important is that it is the most effective art for healing skills. It naturally has potentially lethal applications but few practitioners of the blood study those methods intently. After all most every other art can kill as well if not with greater ease and without the requisite of sacrificed blood.
Blood magic was one of the first major deviations from the Old Magic and as such has a very old tradition amongst its practitioners. Most notably is that each practitioner takes a magically binding pact to never use their own blood and as such blood mages normally travel in pairs. Either as master and student or as colleagues.
The reason this binding is important to most practitioners is to reinforce the peaceful and positive strengths of themselves by crippling their capacity to do harm. With blood magic it is almost impossible to use another's blood without their consent and an inability to work one's own blood stops a practitioner from healing themselves (a dangerous position for any rogue members).
Naturally there still are rogues and several have managed to start their own traditions but they are dwarfed in numbers by traditional practitioners of the blood path.
