Trouble is, the massive paranoia of Russian administration in terms of border control would make it a huge roadblock to actually entering and leaving Russia. It cost me over $300 just to get a visa into Russia, and now it looks as if someone issued me the "wrong type", so I need tp repeat the process again. This involved process is so complex that it requires a broker in Washington DC to manage the paperwork. Then there is the legality of actually traveling across Russia. At each stop where you want to spend an overnight, you, as a foreign citizen need to register with the police, which is about $40 each time. So the costs, the inspections, the border security registrations, etc. would at present, preclude any commonplace travel back & forth into Europe, much less through Alaska and into the North American continent. They can't even keep a regular flight from Alaska into Chukota / far-east Russia. Given our recent harassment by the FSB in that region, I don't think its a very welcoming place for foreign travel or investment. However, it sure is full of empty real estate! Lots of trees and beautiful, scenic mountains. That, and snow. Lots of snow and black flies and mosquitos .... bzzzzt!

There already exists both a trans-Siberian railway and highway-- the second name being somewhat un-official. So such a project can be done, at least on *that* end.
Crossing the Bering Straight would be interesting, as would the construction of the system through the mountainous western Canadian zone. New tunnels?
The only thing more challenging that erecting such a infrastructure would be its perpetual upkeep. Employment opportunities out the ass.

Yes...let's build a highway through Siberia on ground that is predominantly permafrost in the middle of the largest global warming increase in the last 10,000 years or so. That won't come back to bite us on the ass like the railway they tried to build and failed...

Yeah ever since that ice age 10,000 years ago we've had a gradual warming up. Why even the hills around where I live were created by glaciers so many years ago. It's only inevitable that permafrost will someday thaw, unless another ice age is around the corner ready to encase NYC, London and Siberia under a mile of ice again.

It's true that we are in the middle of a warm pass between ice ages. It is also true that the extreme amount of carbon dioxide that's been released by mankind since the industrial revolution is hastening the effect and could have dramatic and disastrous results within my own lifetime. The thaw is not the problem. Its the RATE of thaw that is deadly.
