"Why is Mara being so mean/rapey to Dawn??"
General
I'm starting to get complaints of "A Long Way Down" being a bit rapey and I felt it necessary to clarify what I felt was the obvious...
Mara is a villain in the context of Waystone. I'm doing my best to make you hate her. If you do, then I'm doing my job (yay!). I do NOT condone rape in any way, shape or form, and please don't worry, Mara will be accordingly punished :).
Fibh is just her lackey and so has no animosity towards Dawn. He's far more attracted to Mara than Dawn :).
Please be patient and continue to bear with the story!

I mean really, don't like it, don't click on it.
Rational human being: "Um... No, because I understand the difference between fiction and reality, fool!"
I mean shit, everyone with a brain hates actual rape, but most people don't think about that when watching hentai but hentai in no way is supposed to be realistic. No woman I know of during the process of rape gets TURNED ON in the middle of it. There's a clear disconnect between fantasy and reality going on.
Look at something hard enough you'll eventually offend anybody.
And to your second statement, yes, actual rape is bad. But I wouldn't go as far to say that "no one" gets turned on by it, I personally know a few people who've been raped and are pretty heavily into rape fantasy.
In trying to evolve my personal character "Jackie Shay" I peruse emotional help sites, and forums to read about how people deal with their trauma. I did run across one or two accounts of a person claiming that they liked their experience, (though I would question the validity) but it was obviously not without trauma because they were seeking help. I don't recall the exact details, but they were distraught over the fact they found their own experience thrilling, and that their desires were strongly overpowered with thoughts of being raped again; and they felt that it was becoming an unhealthy and dangerous obsession.
If this is indeed a truthful or at least semi-truthful admission, I can see how hard it would be to admit such a thing.
its nothing new, look anywhere else and you'll see the same closed minded thought process
or she is just that evil that she was taught not to play with her food but entered full IDGAF Mode :p
Because priorities.
<3
Don't give them anything but an unflattering comment about their mothers!
I always thought that was the general Idea that she IS the bad guy because she was referring to her as food/lunch.
The other fish dude, if it is a fish. Looks like a fish. Is her little/large minion. xD
People don't like they don't like I guess?
I'm a little lost.
Keep up the awesome work on the comic!
If you like an Artist that's fine, but, you by no means have the right to stop their growth by trying to silence anyone who wants to actually help them develop as an artist/storywriter/etc. because let's be honest if there wasn't any inherent flaw in the scene, there likely wouldn't be an issue.
Be it the 'being rapey' being out of character for said character, I don't know I dunno who the fuck either of them are but, I'm saying that might be it. And everyone just starts crying fowl left and right even when it's a GOOD COMIC. My only issue is that it's just a good comic, when it could be a GREAT COMIC.
The only thing really stopping me from calling it a Great Comic is that I have the nagging feeling that the people crying fowl are doing so for a reason (Which I've placed my theory on in bold) but, yeah that's just me.
So the TL;DR
Take all Criticisms with a grain of salt but, do the same for your fans, too much unbiased praise hurts more than it helps.
People need to lighten up and separate reality from fiction, there is a time and a place to make a stink about abuse and all, a furry comic with a more then obvious porn story isn't the place for the SJW crusade.
That being said by no means am I against it and honestly will probably breeze through it all the same, words aside I can still enjoy the skill it takes to draw the pictures.
Basically if they don't like it, then they should just go find something they do like instead and leave others alone. Sometimes there is real reason to complain and raise a stink about something, but it doesn't apply here.
Hell, I've even had people send me notes on FA about how my series "ruined Pongo and Perdie's marriage", I shit you not.
I cant make this shit up if I tried..
These are the same people that bitch about video games making kids violent.
Some people just have serious issues separating fantasy from reality.
Do what YOU want.
People are just stupid, pay those no mind.
There wasn't an uproar when it happened on GOT or nearly happened in GOT coz there's a lot of whoring and pillaging on that show just saying..
And also if rape in a fictional sense makes you a villain does that automatically make everyone with a rape-play fetish a villain? I certainly bloody hope not..!
-Drinks tea while waiting for the butthurts to make a reply to ^ That comment-
That's uh, that's not true 8D; There were and are a lot of people who have been turned off of GoT for exactly that reason (ie it's pretty tasteless and definitely insensitive in how it portrays things -- the books aren't as bad as the show but they're still pretty gratuitous).
But even I realized that Mara is supposed to be evil and that there will be some kind of punishment down the road.
People like to overreact. Feminism and being anti-rape are good things! Until someone on the internet starts overreacting, then it just gets annoying...
The important part is that is a fictional story. If you don't like the content of the story you are free to just walk away and ignore it. Nobody is forcing you to read it against your will.
Second point: This story entertains many people including me. And my right to be entertained outweighs your right to be offended.
Third point: It is fetish porn. And the rape fetish is very real and especially common among women. If you don't like it, that is your personal problem and nobody else'. Your personal feelings regarding rape in real life simply don't matter here.
Scappo, don't let these people talk you into something. It's your story, it's well drawn please continue to do your thing. I'll bet my ass that the silent majority of people reading your comic know very well that you don't condone rape just because you drew a story about it.
Keep up the good work!
Real life rape shouldn't apply to fictional story plain and simple. Don't like it? then simply look at something else scrapo has quite a lot of art. It's sad that you had to point out what is completely obvious
Keep up the good work Scrappo!
I'm pretty used to the Waystone style content, it's pretty typical of hentai, so I just look past it; there's usually a "whoops random encounter and really the main character likes it" thing to it and I get its use in narrative convenience so whatever...
That said:
a) rape is terribly overused as a "this is what a bad guy do" device, and rape as a phenomenon is way more complex than that in act and in fallout, so I hope that's not the entire function/summation of this scene's dynamic; and
b) if you're getting enough concern over the subject matter to address it in a journal, maybe take it as an indication that your audience might not be so into it, which is an important consideration if only from a $ standpoint (a comfortable audience is a lucrative one, and one that recommends to others).
So, y'know, bearing that in mind-- you're gonna do what you're gonna do. I like Mara's characterization, personally. I could take or leave the subject matter.
A lot of the responses on here are pretty douchey IMO, I'm kind of um, impressed.
Essentially, ignore the people crying about the content you upload. You can't please everyone, and if people can't handle certain things then they don't have to look at it. It's not being forced onto them. They have the option not to look, or like, but not the right to say it can't be done.
While it's understandable to develop a character well, how you develop them isn't a big deal. To those crying about how some things are overdone, it doesn't matter how many times it's been done. It's still a technique and method of character development. If Mara is the kind of girl who'd do this kind of thing, why should Scappo change her behavior just cause "it's been overdone" or because people don't like it? Answer is he shouldn't, and if he does I'd lose some respect for him as an artist and a writer.
Okay that's it from this Umbreon
A Scappo submission isn't one to complain about I say. Sadly in this day and age everyone has a fucked up opinion to push onto others like that bitch who spritzes you with perfume in the mall. They don't realize how much it irks you to be tainted by their bizarre odor of uneducated thought.
Even if you give them a jolly whacking upside their everything they still dribble on as if you merely didn't hear them the first time.
