All of those products are things that many clients ask of their designers. All of these are bad bad things. Making the logo the most prominent thing on the page, filling the screen with useless, unnecessary text, Filling the page with gaudy florescent colors. All of these can work for somethings, but not most. A lot of people will ask for those kinds of things anyways though and it's your job to either try and talk them out of it, or find some way to make the terrible idea work, at least partially.

How anyone can fail to understand the concept of clashing colours is beyond me [waits for someone to point out one of his colour jobs as containing such.]

Just the other week there was a gay news story in the universities bi-weekly paper [no pun meant] and the idiots actually used the rainbow as the background for the article.... you couldn't even read half the text and it clashed with everything else on the page.

Ugh. Use the rainbow sparingly people! It, like spandex, is a privilege, not a right.

A graphic design student myself, I found no offence to this and even laughed.

Oh, it's hilarious, don't get me wrong. It's just sad because we had people ask us this when we did freelance work as assignments in a few of our classes. No pay for a non profit animal shelter network thing called INACCA. I can't remember if the thing ever took off or not, but they were REALLY pushing for us to have at least 10 puppy dog faces on each page. It was kind of ridiculous.

Fack. Being a minimalist, I think I'd have to turn something like that down or really beat a compromise into their heads >> And arguing is never ny good 'cause they'll take their commission elsewhere.

Wow, I'm not in design but even I can see the flaws in that. There are reasons they are done that way people! I should show the graphic design class at my school this, but they might kill me for it...

The sad thing is, my dad would probably love this stuff. Then again, he'd be using it on "Sale!!!!!" posters that are supposed to be eye-searingly bright and slap you in the face from across the street. Well, maybe not the Whitespace Eliminator. After all, once one gets the customers' attention it's good if they can read the ad.

True enough. A "SALE!!" poster probably should have most of those, but it's bad when you try to put those on a website or a magazine add it's all manor of bad and unnecessary.

Very true. Especially since websites can also include *flashing* bits and animations to take bad taste to a whole new epilepsy-inducing level.

Seriously, though, my dad made sure to explain the difference between the aggressive outside advertising and the informative signs one using once a person's actually in the store or at the website. If a sign isn't easy to read and understand it'll only create confusion once you have a customer's attention. Wacky fonts to a minimum, not too many different fonts, and keep illustrations minimal and on-theme. After all, you want them to see the text first and the picture second.

Too much of the "products" that website showed leaves a sign looking like it was designed by a grade-school art student that hadn't figured out "bigger" and "louder" don't always equal "better."

A lot of clients don't understand that either if my art teachers' horror stories are to be believed. One of them was designing a magazine add for some kind of drug similar to Claritin or something and the guy literally said that he wanted it to look like a car commercial add complete with the uncomfortably energetic guy in the center with starbursts for text bubbles and the logo the size of Texas. She managed to talk him out of it, fortunately, but all of my teachers told me that people in marketing think that they are graphic designers and don't like to be told that they don't really know what they are doing.

That's pretty sad, since my family isn't even formally trained in marketing/design, just business. You'd think the "professionals" in marketing would have at least as much knowledge about composing effective advertisements as a small-scale family business. Then again, it could just be the whole concept of "good taste" that they're missing.

I think they get over reliant on statistics and sometimes forget to apply common sense. Like, we can only guess that that guy went "The numbers indicate that our target demographic likes cars, therefore advertisements that look like car advertisements will be most effective!"

Sometimes simple is beautiful. But if certain clients want something bigger, flashier and uglier, let them have it. They must be really desperate to do that sort of thing.

That, or they're actively trying to parody themselves.
