update to ToS
I really hate making these types of journals but I really need to put my foot down
I've had about 5 separate commissioners completely stop communicating with me in the past year or so, usually after I send them an approval sketch. from now on I'm only taking payment upfront
honestly if you're buying art and change your mind or don't like the sketch, please just tell the artist? it's incredibly frustrating to be chasing after people for weeks in the hopes of a response, it's a waste of my time especially when I could be working on commissions for people who are actually paying. I won't be mad with someone who cancels or changes their mind, but I will be with people who treat me like this
I'll be updating my ToS and future commissions will either require all or half of the payment before I begin the commission depending on the price. I don't want to do this but I need to protect myself
anyway chibis should be opening again soon, I've had a few people ask about them and I want to let everyone know that I am planning to keep doing them! sorry for such a negative journal, I'm always afraid of the backlash when I post more opinionated stuff but I can't keep quiet about this

Don't worry about doing the half up front thing -- I used to do that way back in the day when I was doing commissions, and it was simply too much work. Just take payment up front, period. You'll find that most commissioners will be totally fine with this - and the ones who aren't okay with it aren't people you want to work for anyway. (Although if it's a really expensive piece or multiple pieces, you can always offer half up front payment, but for regular commissions I wouldn't bother)
I'm sorry you've had shitty experiences with some commissioners. It's pretty awful to have to deal with. :/ You're totally in the right with this, so don't feel bad for sticking up for yourself.
I agree with Remma about taking full payment up front rather than in parts, except for very expensive, large-scale pieces or people you have worked with previously.
I wish you luck! There are a lot of people out there who will scam you into providing a free drawing, unfortunately, even if it's unfinished.
just goes to show that no matter how accommodating you try to be, people will still take advantage of you :c i'm really sorry to hear that's happened to you - i know how stressful it can be when something falls through, especially when you're depending on art as a source of income. hopefully this switch will prevent it from happening again in the future.
For me payment-upon-completion is really just something I offer to people I know somewhat well, and trust.
