UK taxes for self-employed people, if so inclined, please! <3

I'd love to hear what the process for that sort of technical work is with some sort of easy reference. I think many other people along with myself have trouble with keeping up on it. As for specific questions, I'm not too sure. I think a lot of people would do well to learn how invoices work since they're a much less slippery and risky slope for commission workers to get their payments safely. Not to mention it's all logged for easy access if it's ever needed for any reason. I would also like to see how you organize your commission notes in terms of what information you keep track of. Also, although I and many others live in different countries I think a simple guide with universal tips on how to keep track of taxes and keeping your books up to date would also be helpful for the sorts who are still living with folks who want to eventually branch out on their own.

I can definitely make something as general tips for taxes. I have to file both UK and US taxes, so I'll try to make it easy between the two and hopefully make it work for other countries as well! I'll have a day sorting out some information and work on compiling it! Keeping track of records is just something you have to force yourself to do, but I'll put out simple forms to make it easier if you want to follow similar! Also invoicing I'll do something on - it makes my taxes a breeze when it comes to showing whats come in and whats gone out.

I really wish they taught me about taxes in school. : (
I haven't got a clue how they work (especially for self employment) and I really struggle with numbers. I keep getting told I don't have to worry about them so much because I earn fuck all really.

I can't do numbers - they do my head in! I've come up with a solution for gauging taxes that I'm going to try this year on my own numbers again. I think I've FINALLY worked out how taxes are gauged and why we pay such random numbers sometimes. If it comes out correct to my calculations (I felt like a math super star after 2 months of smashing my face against this with no proper information online on how to work this out) I'll post it openly! :D

Id certainly be interesting in seeing anything tax related.

I'm definitely interested in the SA302 you mentioned in an earlier journal. I'm all registered with the government, declaring income, paying taxes and operating a real business but still not sure how to prove income, and I'd definitely like to be able to apply for a mortgage in the coming years. Any advice on that would be really cool! <3

Oooh! If you've already been paying taxes in over the last year (or even if this is your first year) you're able to request previous SA302s. If this is your first year of tax declaration then wait about 2 weeks from the point of sending off your self assessment and then you ring HMRC (or whatever theyve called it now!) and you can request it over the phone. They'll print it and its usually with you in about 10 days. =) If you have a few years, you can request them straight away!

I've seen something on the .gov site that you can request them when you file, but its a load of BS. >_> Even with an accountant we searched high and low and its false information. When I rang they said you have to call to get them. Hah!

YES PLEASE! I'm still so unsure with all these things. It would be great to hear experiences from a fellow artist who works like that for years already :D

I'd love to see how you do everything, I declare all my incomings and outgoings but I always feel like I'm doing something wrong >.> so it'd be reassuring to see how you run everything, maybe a little look at your invoice set out? Like what information you include and such.

Any tips that you have learnt along with way, any big no-no's, possibly any things that self-employed can get/do in the UK, such as.... reduced dentist costs for example (I know that isn't one at all xD but I am just curious if there's anything)

I usually end up phoning HMR people a few times and being like "so just to confirm you have recieved EVERYTHING from me for this tax year and I don't need to do anything until next year?" and they're always like "Yeah, you have filled out your online form-thing, it's all done."

I'm all self-taught in this and sometimes feel like ... Hurrdurr what am I doing <.<;

Ooh! I'll try to address a lot of that. I do plan on going through invoices because its really easy and it covers you and your commissioner if something happens. As for dentistry and what not I dont think you can BUT! I have been told glasses are okay! Obviously you have to see to do the line of work we do, so thats a cost that you can cover yourself with. Huzzah! I'm blind as a bat and took a huge knock out of my funds last year. I didnt realize it at the time, but I was just outside of my tax year by 2 days (so it was 2013-2014s tax year still) and I was working on my 2014-2015 taxes, so I couldn't claim for them, boo!!
