Empire Total War Situation Report: Maratha Campaign
17 years ago
General
Let me tell you a tale that streches across time! A tale of the bloody struggle of one people and their quest to retake their homeland and become a power to reckon with. This power I speak of begins in the southern plains of India, in the heart of the Hindu! Proud Warriors and Crafters of a culture that is rich and ancient. I speak of the Maratha.
In the beginning in the most early of the 18th century the Maratha's composed of a small bit of territory straddling a thin chain around the middle of the subconteniant and the southern portions (exceot for the Eyesore of the Raj of Mysore). A place that not even the power of the decadent Mughals had reached.
It was at this time that the Marathas began a very aggresive campaign of conquest. The first motions went into place with the invasion of Berar and Gujarat. The Hindu armies easily chasing out the Mughals. Though at the same time the Mysore Raj saw an opportunity to grab land from the Marathas confident that they would be smashed by the Mughals-they were wrong.
It was at the regional capital of the southern Carnatica that a force of barely 500 Maratha warriors met and defeated an army of Mysores at 1500!!!! Sending them back to their capital with their tails between their legs.
To the North the campaign was going better and better for the Marathas! A force from Berar traveled deep into Mughal territory to capture their capital in Hindustan! Sadly the Mughal Emperor was not there but with that the resolve of the Mughals was crushed-especially as forces from captured Gujarat went onto Rajpootana and encircled the Mughals at Malwa.
These defeats made it easily for the Marathas to capture some breathing space to grow and put down the rebellions (a large one in Northern Hindustan haveing erupted) as well as crush the Mysoreians-which the Marathas did witht he signing of a peace treaty with the Mughals-but like everything-it did not last.
This time it was the Marathas who fought! One army from Berar swept across India's Eastern coast all the way to Bengal! While another from Hindustan not only put down the rebels but marched into Kashmir. A third army from Gurarat sending a smalla ttachment to easily overpower Malwa before heading to take Sindh then the Punjab region!
The Mughals were toppled, their Emperor killed, and for a moment India has its moment of peace-but that was shattered quickly by the declaration of war by the Persia.
Pickking up their muskets and swords the Hindu warriors marched with Sikh and Muslim against this new and outside threat! Yet, even as the Maratha marched into Afghanistan and Baluchistan-a army of zeal filled Maratha soldiers stormed the Portugese Goa! NOW the entire Subcontienent was under the rule of Marathas and many mana nd woman rejoiced at the pride of the nation that had been created.
This wave of fevour drove the Marathas onward! Into Persia itself and to overthrow the Shah and put inplace his brother and give back all of his lost territory except Afghanistan.
The might of the Marathas had becoming almost terrifying! This was evident to many a foreigner as they sent trade ships and proposals to the court of the Rajaess at Bijapur.
It was at this time, that the Rajaess decided it was time for the Maratha to take their place and branch out-not by land-but by sea! The naval power of the Maratha was nonexsistent and they had the power to control trade tot he East Indies. Specially as Muslim revolts in Afghanistan bringing home rule and the Persians throwing off the Maratha's collar (Not to mention the immense amount of gold it took to runt he Marathas large Army), the ocean was seen as a better option.
So, the Marathas took two steps:
1. Was to eliminate the threat of Persian attack and therego a need to march out of India by land. This was done by signing over Baluchistan to the Ottoman Empire as well as propping up and getting closer to the Afghan Emir in Kabul. It worked as Persian aggressors backed off from the borders of Afghanis-Baluchistan.
2. To build ships and stimulate the lush resources of India which the Europeans covetted. Trade was booming as the Marathas aggressivly won trade after trade aggreement.
It was in the year 1722 that the Marathas took their first steps into the world-as a fleet of Brigs and Sloops sailed from Bijapur and into the Madagasscar strait. There a bloody battle with Pirates was fought which saw the capture of anew kind of ship as well as acess to trade ports. A smaller action was taken from Bengalian port to the East Indies but that soon fell apart from the numerous Pirates with their MUCH BIGGER and BETTER ships then the Maratha Sloops and Brigs. So it is here we come to the Present for the Maratha. What could be instore?
What seems next most likely is an aggressive push for researching and building better Warships. Through home research and bargining with European powers. With this the Maratha most likely will compete with the other European nations-enfact a invasion of Ceylon may be in order to eliminate the prescence of the Dutch who have a very large prescence in the East Indies it was noticed. What after that? Who knows...but you will very soon.....
(Thus Concludes my First After Action Report as I play the Marathas in Empire Total War for the PC WHICH is AWESOME).
