Killed an animal when not hunting?
YES. I snapped a bird's neck with dead. There were spots of blood on the tile floor. My stepfather blamed it on my sister because she was 3 years old and had a habit of fucking with the bird.s
Or for non-humans, I've been at the side of many animals friends as they died as well. :/
So alright, obligatory curiosity... brush with death, hmm?

Directly: When I was a teacher at a Montessori school (mixed class ages 6 to 12). While teaching away with the kids gathered around something at the front of the class, I saw out of the corner of my eye that one of the kids (only 6) was playing with something by the wall. As I leaned over, I saw it was the power socket which was hanging out of the wall (being rebuilt or something, I dunno). I just dove at her and grabbed her away as it arc'd and took out power to the room. Not how how I even closed the distance so fast, but all I could think of was "Oh Shhhhhi...."
Indirectly: 1) My brother fell into a pool when I was maybe 7 or so. I was too small to pull him out (and couldn't yet swim at the time), so I ran and got my father. 2) I used to be a first aid instructor at the Red Cross and trained 500+ people over my time there in first response. One weak after training one of the classes, one of my students returned to say he had saved a man's life with the CPR I showed him just a few days before.
What about you?
For indirect influence, the only thing I can think of (and it's a stretch) is that I took my job seriously when I was in the Navy. I was a FLIR tech, and my specific job left me with the responsibility of maintaining the system that kept our ordinance on target - I always said that doing my job well was the difference between us putting a bomb in the bunker, not in the hospital or school it was sitting next to...but I do think that was a bit of a stretch. Kept me focused and made sure that the gear I turned out was top notch, though.
