What does it take for someone to be considered a furry?
Just curious about other people's definitions, because I've been thinking about myself and other stuff lately.
Like, when I was in high school, I was considered by some of my friends to be a 'furry' for even drawing Kemonomimi.
Which never really made sense to me. Haha.
Surely there's a bit of a difference between someone who draws anthros and kemonomimi.
And someone who 'identifies' as a furry.
Either way, just curious to hear (or read rather) what other people think makes someone a FURRY.
Haha.
Obviously I am sorta deciding if I should actually call myself one or 'identify' as one so to speak.
But I'm still super curious to hear other's thoughts.
FA+

is a good question, friend.
I mean I LOVE kemonomimi characters that's basically all I have, I have a few furs and a feeeew feral and I dont mind drawing them but I dont consider myself a furry???
SO. ID LIKE TO KNOW.
I guess maybe it depends on the person?
/sits on
Added: Characters created within the community are also commonly called furry
Of course there are many who would love to deny that because they dont wanna be associated with the name perceived as causing them to automatically be read by the public as being a sexual deviant if you call your self a furry...
As for kemonomimi i personally would also group them with furries, if not then id have to ask why ferals including the quadruped dragons and gryphons here are considered furry when the arnt anthropomorphic.
I personally have typically seen it where, yes, people who make, identify with, and generate primarily animal characters (in varying levels of anthropomorphism) with human characteristics are furries, but they don't have to be strongly involved in the "Furry" stereotype or subculture. I've heard in passing some don't even enjoy it (or some even shy away from being identified as such) because some say it has or can be oversexed and, obviously depending on preferences, that has troubled them.
I think there may also be a stereotype associated with choosing animals to personify yourself in a persona as well - animals by and large are instinctual creatures and, perhaps then, this frees them from other responsibilities that "humans" are given or expected to have. They have....more freedom? so hence maybe why people even choose to identify with them more? Same thing with monsters, I feel, pick something so "nonhuman" and there's no basis to judge it except on what it does but even then it may just turn around and eat you!!1 and it may still be really powerful and controlling and secretive and - maybe a stand in for subconscious things?
But hrm. You know, I really don't know. I've never personally felt like identifying as a furry, though I know as a child a method of escapism I used was pretending to be an anthropomorphized dinosaur, but the same thing can happen in to me in RPs with regular humans (to varying "non-human" qualities) - it can be a way of coping or dealing with every day aches and pains, or just freeing, perhaps a bit like taking a swig of some alcohol (not that I really recommend that..? agh! I'm getting weird, I feel) and then being able to just relax and slip into something else for a while. I guess it can just be a vent or a way to access parts of yourself that you may on an every day basis may not always feel you are allowed or "free" to access.
Dear lord I hope this made sense.
