So what's the idea behind an art purge? I notice a lot of artists do it too.

Too hard to find things, no point keeping art old just sitting around, not like i look at it. When you get to a point in your artistic traning every picture is no longer some sort of special gold coin, you can always make another.
Also, like many rituals it can have a positive physiological effect. Which i imagine is the main motivating factor for many.

For instance, when I let my hair grown to long i feel pretty crappy, but as soon as i chop all that junk off, I feel fantastic, and full of productive energy.

That's an interesting approach. I guess when drawing a lot of pictures just end up collecting dust. That's my issue with my old stack of sketchbooks. I worry I'll lose something important if I toss them.

I don't purge from my computer personally-- but I *do* purge from my gallery simply because after a while, you notice a lot of flaws i your older work and you don't want people to think that they're an accurate representation of your current skill level!

Why not just scrap it. I mean I do look through people's galleries for an idea of their strengths and weaknesses then I play to their strengths when commissioning them however I know that it evolves and changes over time.

Purging art that you no longer like looking at can be cathartic for artists. :9
