Stop shading reference sheets.

I don't think people get how hard it is to pick colors or tell markings in a shaded reference. Like, you can't tell what's the real color or the personal shading style of the artist.
But what do you mean by similar colors? Different hues of the same color area, because when I think of similar colors, I think of two reds that from a distance don't look different.
You might have seen this before, but it was in one of my art books and I thought it was really cool.

I can also see this being different with color pencils, because usually there is enough variation that things won't be super close looking in color.
WHY
*dramatic glasses removal*
Not my reff sheets it'll fuck up your perception and mine! XD
Hell no, this is why more people need to understand some things just need to be strictly flat colors @ ~ @
Shaded refs confuse the tar out of me.
...
I've regretted it to this day and refuse to ever do shaded ref sheet commissions again. It just screws crap up for artists trying to work off of them, srsly. The first time I was asked to work off of a shaded ref sheet someone else did, I recalled the one I had done and was like "ohgawd WHAT HAVE I DONE.." :l
This is why I explicitly DO NOT do this, or I will provide them with an unshaded one to give to artists. Having to squint and strain to see markings on a fully fur-detailed reference sheet. Holy christ please give me strength.
When I was less experienced I let someone commission a shaded reference from me. They then complained that the artists were having a hard time with it and I did a horrible job and no one should commission me. It was literally because the reff was shaded. My mistake, but they got mad at me when I didn't shade it.
you can't please people I swear.
Though more helpfull than shading is multiple views
No 3/4th views all straight on Full Front, Profile and Top Down and Back Towards Camera.
This will ensure the maximum amount of detail and depth on a given character
Of course, updates are slow... And traditional looks shaded even when it's flat with a shitty camera
But I digress
This really is important, and I'm glad you're taking this stand point
I have an 'Manx Cat' auction going on, only shaded her knees as bit and her face, softly because it kind of looked horrible. No sale at all. BUT my other character was sold so fast, it's a drawing of a character with her colors on it. the legs aren't gradient but blurred to the top more above. There's only a few colors.
I'm horrible at it, I guess ... lol
Shading isn't always bad on a ref sheet, but when it is.. it's real bad.
So I guess shininess sells ....
and, I know what colour pencils I used. :)
sometimes.
