its sad because this person WAS a family friend so its a little disappointing, but i mean im going to continue chasing dreams but its definitely knocked my confidence into a ditch aha

This won't make you feel better but it might just make you numb to it (it still makes me angry but it doesn't lower my confidence).

Everyone says this about illustration/cartoony stuff/the stuff you usually find here, no matter the skill.

Even people in arts and design.

"Comics are not real art" , "Illustration is not real art", etc etc.

Modern and Contemporary artists have such narrow views on what art is that they don't accept anything that falls out of what they do. And, indirectly, they drag the """common people""" with them.

I like all sorts of art. The ones I don't don't stop being art because I hate them.

But not everyone thinks like that.

exactly! i believe illustrators are really important, we can create so many messages with our works and heck some artists can make a difference or aid children and people, i mean example, studio ghibli really inspires me, just saddens me when people call them silly paintings.. its my livelihood

People also forget that most stuff that is in museums now used to have useful functions/were commissions.

They also are not aware of how many design they see everyday. Scientific illustrations on books, the stuff on your favourite tshirt, signs, logos, bags...

exactly.. art is marketing and marketing controls the world... if you can design.. you have a huge range of job opportunities
