Searching for a worthy successor to Diablo/DiabloII

Anyone know any good dungeon crawlers that aren't a visual mess? Preferably one with a good, dark atmosphere.
I've played Diablo 3, Torchlight, and Path of Exile, and none of them have the longevity, or sense of investment, and they're generally pretty noisy, visually.
Diablo 3's biggest issue, aside from the noisy visuals, is that there's no real attachment to a character. The game picks your stats for you, and unless you change a setting (which they don't tell you about), your choice of skill setup is fairly limited. And you don't pick skills to level up; you just pick the skill to use because you get them all. There's no sense that it's your character; the game picks your stats, your gear is random, and anyone with the same level can have the same skills.
Path of Exile suffers mostly from the fact that the skills are random drops and have to be put in matching slots on your equipment, leading to a lack of choices since each class basically is restricted to one sixth of the available equipment to be most effective. (I'm not a huge fan of the style either; especially how all the helmets seem to be too large)
Torchlight was just plain unmemorable to me. Literally. I remember practically nothing about it.
Basically, I'm looking for Diablo or Diablo 2 with better graphics and maybe a few mechanics improvements.

PoE I'm not a huge fan of because of the style (especially of the player-character models), the extreme visual noise, and I've found the balance is kinda off. Running into an enemy that can take you from full health to dead almost instantly doesn't really work with health potions that take effect over long periods. It's not bad, but at best, I'd say it's on par with Diablo 2, in terms of my enjoyment.
Can't complain too much, since it's free, but it's kinda disappointing that it's so far from Diablo 1/2 if it has members of that team behind them.
From what I've seen, PoE has a lot of depth and all that, but I'm not much a fan of the style, and I find that more often than not, the whole danger of the game comes from enemies that can kill you in less than a second, which is not enough time for the potions to actually do anything to help. Plus, being always-online means that there are occasional latency hiccups, which can lead to a cheap death pretty easily.
yes please
