When does the alien show up? I'm just wondering as I'm at the point where your trying to make contact with the ship

Not until the middle of the game... and the alien is 100% invincible.. if you are expecting to be able to just shoot it and walk away you'll be dreadfully disappointed... Nothing can kill it.
