Don’t insult your own art.
10 years ago
Seriously guys, whats happening lately that, just in attempts to give me praise, you say things like “You’re so much better then me”, “Your art makes mine look like roadkill”?
Im hating it! Everyone! start apreciating your art! you dont have idea how manny people have asked me “hey, would you teach me how to draw?” dozens! literally dozens! and of course, not even 10% of that people even attempt a single one of the little exercises i give them. You may think your art is bad, but if you have the BALLS to show your art online, have a gallery, and keep drawing with time, you are acomplishing much MUCH more than HUNDREDS or even THOUSANDS of people who cant even have the commitment for! Im sure im not the only artist who has had that situation.
Insulting your own art to praise someone is not flattering at all, have some DIGNITY, youre spending a lot of your time in each piece, and the second you say “my work sucks” YOU THROW ALL THAT TO THE GARBAGE, youre not acknowledging what youve done, and that other supposely better artist gets into a really unconfortable possition of pressure and doubt, a good artist is not god, he or she has commited thousands of mistakes in the strive to make it work, and by deitizing an artist, you only make their “place” unreachable for you.
I dont want that.
I want thousands of good artists that are comparable or better then me, and i want to share with them. A good artist is not that who knows it all, is the one who makes the EFFORT to know it all.
Dont insult your art. youd be insulting yourself,your life, your time spent on your work, and of course, if you care for my opinion, you’d be insulting me.

It just shows a lack of self-respect and confidence. ._.

My boyfriend does Taxidermy for a living... there's a whole "culture" kinda developed around that.
jsyk, I was really amused by this knowing that.
Another example, I really enjoy one of my friend's own talents, Deebs. She's absolutely amazing, and I would love to have her level of skill, but I don't even like saying, "Your artwork is better than mine." What I would (and have) say to her is "Your artwork inspires me to be a better artist and expand on my skills styles and technique. I originally free hand my drawings and as I grew and saw these amazing pictures online I started scanning my pictures and inking and coloring them on my computer. I haven't physically drawn a picture in years now, I work strictly with my mouse. I've thought about getting a stylus tablet thing (whatever their called) but that's just something I don't really need to draw with, a mouse works as well, and gets ME satisfying results as of now. By any chance could I make some inquires about your techniques?" And she took it as flattering and gave me some advice, and honestly, it really did help.
It's fine to admit someone is better than you, but it's not necessary, and for some people it's painful to hear people belittle themselves like that. Instead say something like, "Wow, you're artwork is amazing, I hope one day I can draw as well as you do!" That is flattering! But saying "Your artwork makes mine look like the ass of a warthog!" That's neither pleasant nor something anyone really wants to hear.
I kinda jumble my thoughts when I get on a subject that irks me.
I've tried many times to do the whole "basic shapes first" thing but it just doesn't work for me.
sorry ; w;

Though it's usually exaggerated and used wrong as you mention and results in the following effect.
However, I agree. Don't put yourself down when somebody compliments you. You may not feel it's your best work, sure, but you can still state such in a positive manner of some sort. Leave your ranting about your art for your own area, and keep it off others.
I dont like it when people trash talk their old art, or are ashamed of it . I dont see a reason for it since that is where the artist started!
I feel like people think it's a good way to flatter people as well?
it's really not, it makes us feel AWFUL. like we were invited to your pity party and we have no idea what to do because we just met you and it's INTENSELY AWKWARD
I am always happy to give art advice but I really wish people wouldn't start or end their request for advice with 'my work sucks and is utter turds compared to yours, so...' it's so depressing to read '-'
like if I'm not going to laugh at 2006-me's composition decisions, then what else am I going to do? (the answer is probably cry)
also, Look at my anatomy! http://nedoiko.deviantart.com/art/N.....&qo=14
My whole deviantart is a mess , solely in this folder http://nedoiko.deviantart.com/galle.....-shit?offset=0 theres horrible anatomy, me being pompous about skills i dont posess and even some flat out tracing. praise the lord ive matured this much!
but yeah it irks me when people say 'oh that's because you have TALENT.. I'm just rubbish'
NOPE NOPE NOPE IT TOOK SO MUCH HARD WORK TO GET HERE...
That's what that sort of 'praise' did for me anyway @.@
That phrase has been stuck in my head forever.
But yeah, now more than ever I understand your thought~
thats it ;;
I say this honestly because of how some artists out there... They're actually successful at what they do. I don't even understand why anyone pays any attention to my garbage drawings.
Thing is, insulting your own art is more of an...unhealthy habit, if someone keeps doing it, how long will it take for them to give up, and IVE SEEN the amount of oportunities depressive artists miss just for the safety of their status quo.
