Ouch.

Not that it does you much good now, but most people will advise you not to get a new bike as a first bike. It will get dropped or wrecked, and it's a lot less painful when it's already got a few scrapes.

Also, cars do dumb things. You have to ride like you're invisible. It's not much consolation that you were in the right if some idiot driver gets you killed.

Practice your emergency stops, if you do get another bike. Locking up the front wheel means you panicked. Panicking makes bad situations worse. If the bike skidded 100 ft before hitting him, you had plenty of room to stop in a controlled fashion.

it was actually more like 75 feet not 100 feet (i read the police report and he measured). And also might have forgotten to mention that this guy was literally about to make a right turn and then sudenly just moved into my lane. It wasnt the fact he hanged lanes but that he stopped when he could have kept going. Now I know I forgot to let go of my brake. I havent driven very long and I do remember learning that in my basic riding course, but I still made the mistake and fell. As for the new bike suggestion, i actually disagree mainly because with a used bike theres a possibilitie that somehting could mechanincally be wrong with it. I just feel more comfortable knowing that on a new bike, if something goes wrong its my fault not someone elses.

Raymond up there's right - in general it's best to start with a used bike. Now I'm not talking something thirty years old here, but in almost every case you'll be able to find something nice and reliable, a few years old with a few thousand miles on it that's probably got a few dings on it already, but is very mechanically sound. Not that you wouldn't want to check it over (or have a mechanically inclined friend do so).

That doesn't help you much now, obviously. And you certainly have my sympathy - I've had a few really close calls myself, like a minivan that did a U turn right in front of me from being parked on the side of the road. Either way, do like he said - ride as though you're invisible and as if every driver around you is actively trying to kill you. Good way to stay out of trouble.

you shouldnt let a n accident not make you want a bike, i mean ill be driving it again once its fixed, i enjoy riding to much to not get back on lol
