Like I've been before and it's kinda a small (well small in comparison to downtown Chicago anyways) but basic downtown area. Plus I'd only be rooming alone and traveling there alone. I was already traveling back with people and I'm pretty sure I'd be hanging out with friends at some point when I'm not at my table (probably dinner or whatever).

There'd be no reason to walk down dark alleys anyways. XD

Well I already told her she's helping me out at my dealer's table. Outside of that, I dunno, she can do whatever. She'll probably do what I was planning on doing and spend the rest of the time in the hotel room.

I went to anthrocon with my mom back in 09 and it was fun. Once my mom got over the weirdness of furries, shehad a great time. She even hung out with some and always let me do con things alone when I wanted. She was a great spotter too when I was in fursuit.

Your mom should know... More white people get shot and killed than black. Also... I live in PA and never seen rasim here. Ever.

You should also know that there are statistically more white people than black people so if you average it out, at the rate that black people are being shot and killed more black americans are being killed than white ones.

Not to mention that we vilify black victims by claiming they're thugs and we sympathize with white criminals by saying they're "mentally ill" or a "lone wolf".

People are already quick to defend the shooter in SC who admitted he walked into a symbol of blackness (that AME church) to kill black people. He said it. It came from the criminals mouth.

Also just because you don't see racism doesn't mean it doesn't exist. My mom should know...she grew up in the south during civil rights era. History is just repeating itself again. If you don't see it, it's probably because you don't want to or have to.

The past isn't in the past. Racism isn't in the past. You might hate it but you also probably don't have to deal with it. You probably never grew up with it or around it. You probably don't know what it feels or looks like. Be happy for that, but on my end it is a terrifying prospect. That I can't do anything without worrying about if I'll get shot. I can't cosplay, be safe in my own house, in a car, driving down the street, walking with friends, in a church, online...

I'm sick of people caring about color too but guess what...my skin color still makes me seem less than. That's not acting like a victim. That's just a proven fact because people like you just want to shut their eyes and pretend like racism went away. It didn't.

However if you dislike that I am a black person who is worried for very legitimate reasons about things, you should probably consider only following white people on this site. Sorry to say, racism is still alive and well, being "colorblind" only serves to make things worse, and no one is acting like a victim by being afraid for very real reasons. Surround yourself with only white people and you should be able to avoid the worries that PoC Americans have. That's my advice for you.

My mom and grandparents are coming to AC with me. My grandparents went with me last year. They're in their early 70s and had an absolute blast with it. They loved taking the fursuiters pictures and such. This year my mother is coming as well. She also thinks this thing is silly and a waste but I've taken her to MWFF and snuck her into the Artist Alley and Dealer's Den. Despite her reservations she managed well enough. Maybe our parents can have a little parent's of furry offspring lunch or something.

That would be hilarious. XD

My mom has gone with me to FurSquared too but she only stayed in the hotel room most of the time. She totally should've looked over my table then too. But yeah...maybe she'll like it...probably not. XD

With what has been in media really put damper on what should be just fun fill events. I can sympathize with you no less, my parents will not let me travel solo because of their own worries (mix with my own inabilities).
I would hope they would have faith you would be safe, you have been away before to this convention no? There is no difference here I would think. An the con staff does their best to keep it attendants safe from harm.

Yeah I've gone before but I had two roommates. They're okay if I have people I'm traveling with. Not so much if I don't. It doesn't matter that I have other friends that will be there. They're not traveling with/rooming with me. They're worry I guess is me walking around a city I'm not super familiar with alone which is fine and all but I'm not one to travel too far away from a hotel if I don't have too. If I remember right, there's plenty of restaurants and such around and even so I can just ask friends who have gone more times to show me around.

If it's places within the city I live, they're okay with me traveling alone. If it's a different state, they hate that idea.
