Love too much

No. Not that kind.
I mean the kind of how you invest in series or franchise.
I'm the middle age guy now and I saw quite a lot of fandom. I've been in one myself.
It's really nice to see passion of the fans. Awesome fan project, art, and crafts.
But I also see the dirty side of fandom. No I didn't mean NSFW fanart(although that's kinda dirty LOL)
I mean fandumb.
The popular the franchise the bigger the fandumb. and more vile and vicious too.
I've grown up in 80-90. I've grown up with franchise like Starwars, Pokemon, Dragon BallZ, etc.
I have my own beloved franchise and held it very dear.
Then come Starwars Phantom Menace. At first I didnt know the backlash was this bad(Maybe because of the infancy of the internet)
Most backlash come from diehard fans of the original trilogy. I've read some criticize from those fans. And I agree with some of those point.
What about me? I like the prequels. Oh no! Such blasphemous!
Why I didnt hate the prequels? I watched the original trilogy surely that would make me hate the prequels?
See, while I watched the originals and loves it, that's pretty much how I regard Starwars franchise as a whole. I just love it and that's it.
I didnt invest in lores or merchandise or spinoff and such. I do play many Starwars games though ;)
You see, when you invest too much in something, the more you attached to it. Wow that's kinda obvious LOL
While some hate the changes made to franchise, I dont really care if Hans shoot first or after. I dont really care about Jar jar binks either
For me, sometimes it's better to let go.
.....
Except for later Final Fantasy games. I hate those Jpop-idol douche XP

At the risk of sounding trollish, I think fans feel so passionatly about a franchise because they don't have a whole to of other things to care about in there lives. I LIKE science fiction and some fantasy. I enjoyed Harry Potter and a few of the Star Trek series. I'm a fan of Clamp. But I've got too many important things in my life to get attached to a franchise.
There's a lot of anthro artist I like and I follow their work (You are one of them, obviously). But between community involvement, politics and my nieces and nephews, I've got more than enough things on my mind to get worked up about the new Star Wars movie, or Jurassic World.
And the most vocal people probable aren't the norm, just the loudest. >^_^<
But most fans just too attached and put on nostalgia glasses all the time.
As for using similar plot, I think if it's done well then I see no problem with it. good movie doesnt have to be innovative .
What I mean by that is there's this attitude of 'you either love this thing entirely, or hate this thing entirely'. For example, as you used, the Star Wars prequel trilogy. So many simply hate on that without end, and have done so for so long, while now there are also those who like them as well. Both sides however, as a general rule, I know it isn't gonna apply to all of them, can't seem to get that there can be a 'middle ground', of people who might like or dislike those films, but have points they are willing to admit as to what might be right or wrong with those movies.
because instead of having a discussion all we got is dismiss and denial.
And when they hate something, there's nothing you can do to convince them otherwise.
I do hold the position that some things can be better or worse based on the goals of a work, which people also seem to misunderstand as opinion pieces. As an example, The Phantom Menace (and the prequel trilogy as a whole) was made as a family movie with the intent to "grow up" with the kids that watched it, if I remember right. It was not a love letter to the old fans for nostaliga purposes, it seems like was something to get kids who would take a look at the old movies and go "ew this looks old and stupid" into star wars. And being a kid when they were released I can definitely say that children did hold that opinion at the time (and still do... Look up the "kids react to the original gameboy" video )
Most people tend to not be able or willing to distinguish between the goals of the work and the way those goals are attempted to be met. Thus it becomes a "like it or hate it" scenario - Jar Jar is useful as a funny character for kids, but is not useful in many other contexts. And I admit that as a child I thought Jar Jar was fun :P
As I ask my younger relatives and they tend to like it or at least dont have problem with it.
And yeah I find Jar Jar funny when I first watching Phantom menace as well, as I grow older I find him a bit annoying but he didn't "ruined" prequels for me.
So while I'm not really a Star Wars fan I can kind of feel sympathetic for the fan backlash. The prequel trilogy wasn't THAT of a radical change but it did kind of feel like its own thing often. Of course, I don't think anyone needs to be crucified for liking it.
