I was fortunate not to be one of these people. My sister wasn't so lucky. She got a job that was literally sucking her soul. Fortunately, she had a moment of and within 15 minutes had given her 2 weeks notice. She's much better now and working in a similar company, but with a much better experience.

I never had a problem saying "no" when people were being retarded. They'd ask for a supervisor, I'd put them on hold, take a little 10 minute break, then get back on and tell them that no supervisors were available and I could arrange a call back in 2-4 days. I had no problems helping people in every way when they had a legitimate issue, but I wasn't some doormat for them.

Working at Wal-Mart for ten years was a soul-sucking experience. Fortunately I had a few good people working with me who made all the bs worth it.
