What does it take to be a nice artist? [personal rant]
DISCLAIMER:If you feel butt hurt over what I write here I'm sorry, you must be one of the kind of people I criticize, I've nothing personal against you.
Now, I've been on FA for 1 year so I think I have the barely needed amount of experience to lay down the base of how FA is going on, at least in my honest opinion.
Personally I think that FA is more becoming like a place with charity, nothing wrong against it, I'm not an artist, I don't like by my commissions so I can understand how, some artists have to do these sort of stuff.
I've read of many people needing money for .. everything? losing home, dentist bill, buy grocery and I've also seen, sadly I've even experienced on my own skin, some scammers.
But let's return to the main topic and let's proceed with the main question: What does it take to be a nice artist?
Personally I'd say a decent level of shading and coloring and, most importantly: a UNIQUE drawing style.
I see A LOT of talented artists, often underground, being not even getting comms and most of the time they make great piece of arts.
What makes me go nuts it's seeing a uncountable number of style stealer... what I mean with style stealer? Have you seen russian artists? They are the bad copy of Wolfy Nail. Now I'm not saying that every russian artist is one but, as far as I've encountered them, most of them are, and some of them even got popular while putting nothing personal into it.
Now, the rant is over, I'd just like to conclude this by saying: pay more attention to who you give your money to, I don't think that a commission from a well known copy cat is more valuable than one from an original artist, even if you don't get boosted in popularity, the furry world is not some competition about who's most famous.
Peace.

But Wolfy's style isn't the only thing I feel like gets emulated I just don't know the name of the original artist (lost in obscurity forever...)
Wellwell, I do my best to be one. But I am not talking about my art style here.. I think trying new things and improving isn't always as easy as it sounds, but I do my best.
However, I think something else is more important: the way you act with your customers. There are people who demand payment before they even did a sketch.. I sent around several sketches and check quite often if the colours and anything else are alright! The commissioner wants to get something for his or her money so I want to make sure that he or she will be happy with the outcome.
About originality.. I don't know, I think art style just happens. To learn to draw or to improve yourself it's told that you need to copy many pictures to get an eye for proportions and blahblah. Probably many people happened to be copying Wolfy's art to learn it?I to be honest think it's funny.. many people will reach Wolfy's standards from one or two years ago very soon by demanding about 10% of his prices!
Eh, I talk too much.. however,I think corporation between artist and commissioner is the most important!
I also have a small peeve about those who take on large work loads but don't have the proper drive to finish commissions at a fair pace they take in commissions. And then decide to put aside people who bought a commission a long time ago, only to be shelved so that the newer ones can be filled ASAP. In what way does that feel fair? I can understand emergency commissions but that doesn't excuse the fact they are still commissions. I won't name names, but I had a good share of people who did that to me, mostly popular artists, hence why I avoid them and commission the smaller artists, gotta give them a chance to shine ya know. .w.
