Hey guys!
This idea is still -very much- in it's infancy... But I am potentially creating an original species, I literally -just- got an idea for it (based on an egg adopt I am currently making) so I wanted to ask what you guys thought about closed versus open species. What do you prefer? As a creator? As an owner/buyer?
If this species were to be closed, it would be offered through my custom adoptables (egg, totem, etc.) and single character auctions only (i.e. I would not be creating bases for this adoptable type) and I would not be doing flat sale at all for them. However this means I would not allow other users/artists to create designs or characters based on my species.
If it was an open species, I would still not allow users to just create their own characters of their own volition, however I would release an adoptable base back (for purchase, like the waitress base) specifically for this species alone. I would personally still create customs for egg adopts and the like, and would auction off characters and things of that nature, but other artists would be free to use my base to create and sell adoptables of this species as well.
I'm personally not sure which idea appeals to me the most. The second would allow more freedom for everyone else, but would mean more regulation on my part. And of course as I said before, I have yet to really work out the nitty gritty details of the species yet, so I'm still in the hypothetical portion of this idea!
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your insight! I appreciate any and all thoughts on the matter that you are willing to share, and thanks for bearing with me and all of my chatty journal posts xD

P.S. I'm thinking name wise, a combination of Fae/Fay/Faerie(the demon kind) and Feline/Felyne. I need help with spelling though! Faeline? Faeliyon? Idek.

If you'd make an open one though, the guide about the species is the best friend of the creator and fans. Possible colours/markings/anatomical changes/etc.
Tl;dr - I don't like the whole idea of 'closed species', but they're very profitable.
Part of me really likes releasing some sort of an adoptable pack for the species. That way they would be more open to people, but I can still make some funds off of them/regulate and make sure that people are actually following the perimeter of the species.
The species I have in mind isn't like, superbly overly complicated either though, it would likely be very easy to create a hybrid of two creatures and have it look almost identical. I still have yet to figure out what their 'trademark' is going to be.
Yes, this. And i guess I would hate for my designs to be so sought after that they are hoarded (like dreamies and eerays and the like) so maybe a more open species is the better idea.
I mean I put in my TOS that if anyone was inspired by any species I make and wanted to make their own, to go ahead because I'm inspired by the same things. Like, all of those closed adopts that go for hundreds of dollars sometimes freak me out because they are all the same??
Like yay you made a fluffy eared space dog unicorn thing! And that one is the same just with hooves! I wanna make a fluffy eared space dog thing... but then I might get yelled at for wanting to make one because I didn't come up with the idea first to give a deer or a puppy some papillon ears, a unicorn tail and some stars doodled on their butts.
I dunno. I want to have room to play with lore and incorporate things that inspire me into original things I make, so I'm thinking I might start out with it being closed and then open them up to a degree. It's not so much that I want to hoard them that I want people to also be inspired by designs, to want them, and for me to have more room as a creator to make a foundation of some kind, if that makes any sense.
And yeah! I mean, most original species are not great or super fantastically different from existing things (because let's face it, it's nearly impossible to come up with a completely original idea). I figure people will probably accidentally or unintentionally make characters that are similar to my species--thought I intend for it to be very lore based, and to work my adoptable sales directly into the canon.
So yeah :U I like your idea of starting out with a more closed idea, but then afterward, sort of loosening my grip on it a bit more after the species is already well established.
