Okay, first things first, PLUTO FLY BY! \(^o^)/

(Edit: As of tonight, NASA has confirmed successful fly-by - WE DID IT!)

I'm a huge science geek and astronomy is a big interest of mine. I'm also old enough that when I was a little kid, most books had no good pictures of any of the planets beyond the blurry crap we could take through telescopes of the day. I watched in awe as Voyagers 1 and 2 beamed back pictures of Jupiter and its moons, Saturn and later would go on to Uranus and Neptune. To see it all change from blurry pictures was amazing.

Pluto, however, was not in the right position for either of the Voyagers to visit, so remained a mystery. Now we are finally getting to see what it looks like, and this is an ASTOUNDING feat. Pluto is so far out there that it takes the speed of light 4.5 hours to make it there. And while Pluto may not be regarded as the last planet anymore, we know it's one of many dwarf planets that exist on the edge of our solar system, so to get to see it in absolute clarity and understand something THAT far away is amazing.

Second, to get the latest pictures, go to the link below, but keep in mind three important facts:

1) When doing the Fly-by, New Horizons will be pointed away from Earth focusing all instruments on Pluto and it's moons. It will passing by at almost 10 miles per second, so it has only a short time to take as many pictures and readings as possible.

2) The signal from New Horizons will take 4.5 hours to reach Earth, and even then you don't exactly get 4G data speeds. More like... 1980s MODEM speeds. It will take a long time to pull the first images off. In fact, they estimate that it will take until early 2016 to get all the data off of New Horizons after the encounter. We'll likely see the best pictures a day or two after it passes Pluto. If it survives because...

3) It will be passing the equatorial boundary of the planet through the orbital path of the moon Charon. This was the best hope of a clear path because at 10 miles per second, hitting something the size of a pin head would be like getting hit by a cannon ball, and will destroy the probe. So... let's hope that doesn't happen! Check this site out of the latest images:

Also, what a crazy morning - we had two power-failures at the campus, one being about 10 minutes long (which is really bad). Then meetings in the afternoon, so busy day again. Taking tomorrow off though hopefully to get some more kayaking in. :D

Greer and Mahingan face off in a foot-sniffing contest, and I don't think Mahingan's going to win this one. Both males have very attractive feet, but there are few out there who can compare to the carefully seasoned scent of our favourite rock python.

A gorgeous shot of the foot of Alessandra. This lady has one incredibly beautiful sole - thick, meaty and with such a lovely shape to the toes (at least from what we can see sole-view). Her baby toe (the one that often makes/breaks a human foot for me) is just perfect in size and shape. What a treat that would be to see peeking around a tree trunk in the park. ^_^
