well what they mean is they are willing to pay for you to animate for them but they are too poor to begin to properly compensate you. I for one think $500 for animation is reasonable.But some people dont realise how much work it is.

In the end its always an artist call to do as they want, just not sure how good of an excuse it can be with so many people expressing interest in the piece and the fact that it was posted right after what many would say was the biggest furry con. A lot of hurt bank accounts right now hah

So the reality is that they would have never fit my schedule then. My free time is during the summer (which is con season) and Winter (xmas time) so I don't think the results would have been much different.

My second argument actually refers to me (possibly others) when someone linked this to me originally I was under the impression that payment for the whole piece was due up front. 500 is just a large chunk for me to throw down immediately, but had I read carefully I would have learned that half was due up front which would have put it in my range actually and I would have thrown down a bid. Its what I get for being brain dead I suppose How long does it typically take for you to near completion for the second payment to come through?

Im not trying to go out of my way and say your pieces aren't worth the amounts you request, just I was always under the impression that many artists expect full payment upfront or nothing at all. Just unfortunate timing for some and misunderstanding for others.

posting anything very expensive a few days before,during or after anthrocon might tax any wallet. I`d be very tempted say right after I got my tax return in feb but right around anthrocon isnt any good time for me to drop over $500

If it makes you feel any better, I would probably never have done an animated piece on a February, lol.

I suppose one could offer to prepay you when they do have the money with an agreement or you to work on it later in the year when you think you will have the time to do so.Thats one work around that particular situation. Regardless your animations are worth what youre asking for.

I have seen cases with pics but all is a sum of characters and stuff, on a animation and specially a YCH is the first time I see it

Plus the economy here is shit, the minimum is less of $200 someone could earn

People on this site have easily sold YCh pieces for 300-500 a pop. I've seen it happen on numerous occasion.
People have sold flat colors for equally high numbers - say 80.
500 is like beyond reasonable for a piece that will consist of HUNDREDS of redraws and recolors to make a fluidly moving sequence (a well done one at that.. as AJIN knows what he's doing).

so honestly it's really unfortunate it didn't sell, imo.

Maybe you should think smaller? Like little animated icons that are only a few frames? They can be templates too so you can reuse them and sell them to many people.

And be another fish in a sea of mediocrity. That's exactly what I don't want to do. I'm going to do more animation, I just won't bother offering them as commissions.

I used to think it was really dumb when people would tell me that Anthrocon was a shit time to open commissions/take commissions until I actually had to do it once, and found I had trouble selling even the most menial types of pieces haha. While it's more than possible it was not that variable, I think it is worth considering and perhaps offering the same thing again down the line when and if you're feeling up to it again to see if you'd have different results!

Actually, I got an idea. Every time you open for commissions, I'll commission you for a single picture, as expected. Every time you open up, I'll jump at the opportunity and get another picture. However, what I'll do is basically commission one frame at a time, and you would be none the wiser, and animate it myself!

The nature of an auction is generally to start lower and let it go up due to demand. I could see it easily topping your starting price in a bidding war. But as an animator myself, I could understand being wary of allowing this to go for too low, considering the exhausting time and effort animation takes. Perhaps set a reserve price a la ebay?

I can understand how it feels. Animation is really tooks time and really hard to manage the time schedules. I think a lot of people cant see that.

best idea is to start at $250 or relatively close to such and start a buy now at $500 so they have a chance to bid and war it out amongst other furs. trust me its not gonna hurt you to start bidding at less than what you want.
